Basically assume there is no decent mic on a GoPro in a case. They are designed for extreme sports footage with a funky music soundtrack over the top, but of course we want actual real sound (no F10 M5's or M135i's here..) so for that you need a plug in mic, but only after you've paid Go Pro for mini-USB adaptor unfortunately.
The sound dips because on the non sunny footage I didn't have the mic plugged in. And I upped the volume on those bits to compensate.
A DSLR on a metal mount attached to rear seat headrests works really well and the built in mics are good but a Go Pro has a much wider field of view and in the same position I think you'd get too much car and not enough track.
No need for wifi controller, everything works off a smart phone and after the last software update you can view and store footage straight to an iPhone too.
