I have viewed some cars and found defects that I would want to rectify, but dont want to pay the asking price. This is after speaking to the seller and being reassured its perfect in every way. The seller would not budge, not even a Single £.

If you are travelling a massive distance, even more important. Some cars look "right" and interest me, but are obscenely overpriced. So knowing if the seller will take less than his silly asking price.

I dont see it as a problem, with the cars I sell, I get people asking that exact question, I respond by saying, that I want as close to the asking price but I am open to negotiation.

Also when I advertise a car and I need say £5k back for it to make me a wage I will advertise it at say £5495, and when the people ask that question I say £5k, no lower. They feel like they have beat you down and getting money off.

I personally prefer someone asking me on the phone if I will take £4500 for a car I have advertised at £6k, not after they have wasted hours and hours of my time coming to view and test drive then low ball you. That pisses me off far far more.
That's a good point. Saves everyone's time if they are thinking of sniping you down a big chunk! Amazing what some people consider a sensible offer but I suppose if you don't ask you don't get and the way the country is at the moment some people are willing to take a hit
