Advice on oil level and BMW car prep
Guys
as you know I picked up my baby and the handover seemed good, the sales guy was really nice etc etc. I had a question in my mind over the way the car was prepped. I wanted the car in the showroom so me and a pal could go over it before driving off. I noticed the rear offside tyre was really low on air... how could such an obvious thing be missed? This caused me to question the level of care put into the prep. I was excited about the car so told the sales guy as the techs had all gone home I would drive a mile to the petrol station but if the tyre had a slow puncture I would want new rears..... all fine. I get home and I notice the oil level is 0.5, should it be more for a car leaving the showroom? Last night the low oil warning light comes on... I was on a hill so I am not sure if this would cause it? Just off to get some TWS in a mo from my pal who is a BMW master tech but I am concerned they have not put the required effort in. What do you guys think? Cheers Lee

An oil level of 0.5 is fine. Remember, that's 0.5 over the minimum level. (Mine just came back from an Inspection II with +0.2. For my peace of mind though, I'm going to top it up to +1.0) Although don't go and do what XPorker did - ie over fill it by about 2 litres!
Is the oil light still on? If so, have you tried the 'quick' oil level check? I can't remember the procedure off the top of my head but you'll find it in the manual. As for the low tyre, that just sounds like par for the course from a BMW dealer, I'm afraid. They had probably given the job to a YTS kid. Good thing that you picked up on it though. |

Oil light went after turning the engine off and back on but as you say I will put a drop in. I couldnt find the oil check procedure in the manual but read on here that it is as follows: Engine running and warm on level ground, hold the sport button down while having the oil level showing on the dash. My power steering pump is noisy also on turning the wheel while stationary... like leaving a parking space. So glad I went for BMW dealer warranty, worth its weight in gold for peace of mind. Thanks Lee

Did you get the CSL Supplement with your manual? Because the oil level sensor is specific to the CSL, it's in there.
If you didn't get the supplement, here's the procedure out of mine: Quick Measurement If necessary, the current oil level can also be measured quickly. for example after the oil has been topped up, but you should bear in mind that such quick measurements are less accurate: 1. Position the car on a flat, level surface. 2. Switch off the engine, which should be at its regular operating temperature. 3. View the oil level reading on the onboard computer, see page 12. 4. Start the engine and allow it to idle for at least 2 minutes. 5. Press and hold down the Sport button, see page 11. The reading for the current oil level flashes on the display. If the old long-term reading appears instead of a flashing reading, the system was unable to perform quick measurement. This can happen if the engine temperature is too low, for example, or if the car is not standing level. A line of dashes in the display indicates that measurement is still in progress. Which is, er, basically what you just said! |
