Rear Diffuser part number
Hi Everyone,
A quick question. I'm looking to replace my rear diffuser and after a conversation with my local BMW spares guy (Brisbane Australia) we are both unsure as to the rear diffusers part number. Using the same online system he and i could only find 51 12 7 897 863 - which lists as Cover, Bumper, Rear Primed. Now as far as i'm aware the diffuser is a carbon item from the factory and shouldn't be primed as that would suggest its an item to be painted. Is there another part number anyone is aware of for it, or have BMW been un-german in their naming convention and not been specific. Cheers James |

These now come primed not painted. They stopped painting them in mid 2014 and dropped the price accordingly also.

I'll take some photos in the morning.
Mine is a complete carbon piece. If i understand correctly this shouldnt be the case. The below is the best i could do in the light available in the Shed at 1120pm.

^ That's a replica diffuser by the looks. Someone must have swapped out the genuine one for a fake.
The new ones are unpainted - period. They used to come painted, but not any more. |

Thanks guys,
Jbird from the rear it looks like the diffuser is a complete carbon part that has been sprayed. I'll take mine off on the weekend and look to see if its just an unpainted unit or an aftermarket copy inserted as a replacement part because they've clipped something like i appear to have done at some point. Ill update shortly. Thanks again, James.

Yes its a complete carbon part, even the clips. They mask around the center section and just paint the outside, then clear coat the whole thing.
I cant say for sure that mine has not had a lick of paint at some stage, but it is most likely 100% original (low km car, and you don't get stone chips at the rear, so cant think why it would have been re painted..) Yours certainly looks like a replica. The weave seems wrong. It looks like hand layup carbon, not autoclaved prepreg like the original. |

I think you are 100% correct.
I'm still yet to get under the car effectively and remove it as someone had popped a 320i on the hoist for the day on Saturday at our Storage shed and workshop. The two offending gouges. I quite like the aftermarket part being all carbon and clear coated.
