Quick Oil Question
Hi All,
Just looking to stock up on 10W60 in the sales. ECP 50% off with code BF19, so 8 litres for £78. Q: is Castrol Edge FST the "only" oil anyone uses in CSLs? No love for anything like Millers or Motul super synthetic stuff? BTW, I don't need an oil change, I had one done pre-purchase by a BMW dealer and currently showing +0.5l on the display, I just like to have supplies on hand and will be doing annual oil changes despite being a long way from a scheduled service (last Insp 2 service was beginning 2019 IIRC). Thankyou |

I personally use the new Shell oil supplied by BMW, purely because my car is still under the extended warranty, so is serviced by BMW. I did carry on using the Castrol TWS until BMW ran out and I had hoped to continue using it by purchasing it from the likes of Opie (now that they could supply it to the public). However, once Castrol lost the tie-up with BMW, they discontinued the TWS and went to the generic "Edge" formula, which I am not sure is the same as the TWS. They "say" it is compatible, but again, anecdotal information says that it is not as good. Personally I would speak to Simon at Opie and get his take (I haven't as yet, purely because I'm using the recommended replacement Shell equivalent - that way if anything happens to the engine, there is NO wriggle room from BMW trying to say the wrong oil was used). As to running it at 0.5, this is okay on the road, but don't do any track driving with it below 1.0 .

Opie says -
"The Gulf Competition, Fuchs Pro S, Red Line and Millers are probably the best oils. The Fuchs Supersyn, Mobil, Shell, Castrol, Motul and Gulf Racing are the more basic choices, but still good oils." I am a believer in the fully ester based 100% synth oils and have used Fuchs Pro S a lot in the past. FYI Opie have 15% off black Friday deal - so about normal discount for them. |

I have ordered Pro S - which has a free litre with every 5 litres. So, <£60 delivered for 7 litres.

PS. This was tested back to back with the old Castrol RS and then analysed (after a 200mph run) and the Castrol was basically fubarred (having lost all it's protective properties due to the shearing it had undergone at those loads), the Silkolene (as it was back then) was MINT .

Great question and perfectly timed.
Sump coming off the CSL this week to change out the bearings so I'll be looking for oil in the coming weeks. Race car was running Liqui Moly but its swapped out after every event so for longevity I cannot comment. |

What is the current thinking on when/if to take a preventative look at bearings?
A bit like water cooled 911 engines, there seems to be a lot of speculation about issues that may or may not be real. Or at least, may not be prevalent to the extent the internet suggests. |

My thought process is it you are checking them then just change them out. No point in going that far and refitting used bearings. Race car had low 60's on the clock and bearings were ok when removed. M5 (V10) had mid 70's on the clock and were perfect when removed. CSL has high 70's on the clock so they will get changed. CSL has already had the HG done so with these done as well it should hopefully provide me with many more years of fun. |
