Indeed
IIRC Alexk had to ask one of BMW Museum employees to pop it open for us.
BTW this... is my favorite CF air box form the Munich trip

Any idea what the Race GTR made power wise ?

And anyone ever see a picture of the interior of the production car ?
One of the engine and an interior shot for good measure:

GTR for the ALMS series had to run ''air restrictors''
for the Intake which were feed directly from behind
the 2 front grilles.
Hence the Radiator was mounted at approx 30 degrees,
and the hot air was routed either side of the dual
intakes, up to the underside of the bonnet, hence the
bonnet vents.

The GTR bonnet with S54 may drop the engine bay
temps a little, but at speed the airflow velocity pushes the
warm air either side the engine block more so
than up to the bonnet where the air vents are located
on the GTR type bonnet..

On warm Track days would have much better results if
rear bonnet grille [where the washers sit] was removable
or had a removable large section, or raise up the
rear bonnet hinges so that the bonnet when shut
is 15/20mm higher at the rear to let the warm air
out up over the screen.

As regard the production ''GTR'', if you can find
the 10 vin numbers for the alleged/rummored
10 that were supposed to have been produced,
then you know something that BMW dosen't.
3 maybe 4 at best.

Ironic that Porsche of all manufactures cried the
loudest in 2001 [ALMS] when BMW pulled the rug from
under them on how to ''interpret'' the rules
given how the Guys who make the Stuggart Beetle
decipher them in Motorsport.

GTR had the P60 B40 engine, even with its
restrictors, a CSL/S54 would never live with it,
without them you may just glance its rear spoiler
as it vanishes out of sight.

The Gorilla.
Are you an aerodynamicist by any chance :-) ?

P60 B40 is a MS Evolution of the Mader engine,
whereas P65 [S65 Race variant] is evolution of
the S65.

Road GTR was ''detuned'' and also had a
restrictor in the plenum and was rated
at between 360/380 BHP but more like
400/420 in the real world.

P60 B40 in full race trim without restrictors will
do over 500 BHP as you say, but the
the restrictors for ALMS rules give around
440/450 BHP tops, and approx 360lb Torque
361lb to > Nm =481, which is the real
reason Porsche got the arse ache,
and also why all these alleged 430/450 BHP
S54 's are more fiction than fact.

The Gorilla.
Btw what is the Mader engine ?

Did BMW buy these back because not very drive able in the real world ?

Hi,

Quote- ''Or take out the air filter housing''

I removed all the Pollen Filtre/Housing/seals etc
and have replaced it with a simple Carbon Panel.

You need something [panel] to chanel away any
rain water etc.

Mader is ''Heni Mader'' who worked closely with
BMW on engine development.
You can Trace the origins of the Renault F1 V8
back to the early Mader Mechachrom which
Mader developed starting with a S62 [E39 M5]
Alloy engine bloc.

In 2001 BMW tried to recover all the P60 B40 engines
as run in the ALMS GTR cars as it was going to be the
template for the S65 [ No flat plane crank though]
and they realised that some of the V8 GTR PTG Cars would
end up in the hands of Privateers.

There is still a P60 B40 in some Show car in the States
that the owners refuse to send back to BMW.

P60 B40 Engine drives just fine, much sweeter on a Track !!
