What about the previous owner? Worth a pop, maybe he's suddenly 'found' it since he sold the car to you.
Tried the Ex owner, no joy there mate...

Expensive mistake mate, but at least there's no chance of you making it again, now you have a spare. ;-)

You didn't happen to ask how much a new key is for an E36 318i did you?
There's a guy over on M3cutters that's spending a FORTUNE on an E36 M3 Cab, bought it rough and replacing loads of parts on it to bring it up to A1 condition. Each to their own I suppose. My point is, he only paid £40 iirc for a new key for his, where does the extra 90 bangers go??? Alarm part of it? As the E36 only has a wee light on it...

Absolutely no comparison between the E36 & E46 keys. Our E46 keys have a micro chip inside that stores lots of info like chassis number, service history info, mileage, etc + there's a rechargable battery inside that gets charged via ignition slot, everytime you use the key, so if you have both keyes it's important to alternate the use of both keys, as failier to do so can result in one of the keys going completely flat, loosing it's memory
Also, the E46 keys require coding/programming to the car for the alarm/immobiliser + all of the other functions to work 100%
