You can have lots of personal options programmed to the key. I've got a PDF but its too large to upload, and I'm too lazy to use an alternative at the mo

thought the gearbox settings were all part of the options you can programme onto the key, like if you want the doors to automatically lock as soon as you drive away. this is an important option for me - i live in bradford

The newer software gives a less abrupt/slower change, race set-ups use the older software for quicker change. Im sure simpsons programmed old software onto nathans britcar.

Yes you are right. My old key stayed in manual mode, the "spare" started it in Auto.

You learn something new every day! This might be something to do with the dreaded 'clutch slur' then!?

Rob's is a later car and he's never had it in all the miles he's covered whereas mine is an early car and I needed a whole new clutch!

Indeed - it is well known that many early CSLs suffered clutch issues due to the aggresiveness of the SMG program and it's shift speeds. That's what prompted BMW to issue an SMG update in the first place which toned it down a tad. I think it was one of the re-calls on the CSL in it's early life.

I'd rather have a slightly less urgent SMG software and have a clutch that lasts a decent while longer with no slur!

I suspect they all left the factory with the same code as they were all built close together and suspect the Amy updates weren't available until after December 03 when the last one was made?

As said, I have got the very early code on my car, I suspect it is town driving that caused issues.

I had 2 clutches under warranty in the early days and when it went in for the third they replaced the smg ecu with a later one which sorted it, wonder if the ecu was changed mid production run? Maybe coinciding with the switch from 0 to N on the cluster?

Fair enough, I think on your last point you've got to be right, in the real world there will be bugger all difference between them, probably not even enough to notice!

You'll have to take me on a hot lap in your car one day and we can see!
