S54 is alloy head and should be re-surfaced everytime
the HG is replaced.
It was done by an authorized BMW shop under insurance. They had problems finding what was wrong, the motor had a strong ticking noise. After failing to find the source of the noise they removed the head. They then sent it off for finishing since they found a very tiny hairline crack between cyl. 5 and 6. And finally they found a worn down exhaust rocker on cyl 6 - the cause of the ticking of course - so they changed the cam and all rockers. Would I be right in presuming they'd re-surface, being authorized shop probably knowing this is a must do ?

Sounds like something I could take with me and swap to when at the track? Anyone know of any helpful pics on the net so I understand the "remove the centre but keep the outer, prevents water caviataion" better so nothing goes horribly wrong
