SB CSL Rybrook Warwick
Was at Rybrook Warwick today to sort front brake discs and in the 5 mintues I was there an SB CSL parked next to me in the carpark. Had an aftermarket exhaust on it too.

Ages since I was on here. I think that was me, it was day I sold her. Swapped for a 1M - not a patch on the CSL...

My thoughts on why it's not a patch are very subjective but here goes...
The CSL was obviously a much more expensive car when new and so feels much more special. The big thing for me is you always new you were sat in something special - carbon, great seats, the steering wheel etc. The seats are the same as ones in a 335i I had 3 years ago, they don't hold you well and are too high up. The steering wheel is too fat. It feels a lot less 'planted' than the CSL, it feels a little stiffer yet rolls more - probably exaggerated by the seating issue above. It can struggle to get it's power down - in part this is down to the relatively huge amount of torque it has (but then I wonder how a new M5 gets any power down!) but also because as soon as it hits a bump the rear wheels skip and break traction. This obviously has an impact on the handling point above. I actually miss the SMG. It does less MPG than the CSL. It doesn't sound like a CSL!! On the plus side, it's well equipped and much better for the high miles I do, it does have a good exhaust note (no induction noise though), it's faster in a straight line than the CSL and the huge torque means it's effortlessly fast. Basically I had to replace the CSL (it had done 90k miles and it was starting to show it) with something that would cope with quite high miles, was practical (seats 4 and can get a bike inside it), and didn't cost too much to run. All this ruled out a current M3, a GTR, a Cayman R and a GT3. It's also nice that it is quite rare (450 in the UK) and has a thriving forum. So that's my thoughts, I'm sure there are people who would disagree (and they have probably never owned a CSL!). |

Yeah, I am, but life moves on. The 1M is OK as a daily driver and I have an Exige to have fun in...

Tex, you haven't gone for a valencia orange 1M have you? I sometimes used to see my / our CSL parked at Derby station, now I've noticed an orange 1M.
I'm still in the M5, owned it for longer than anything else I've had, which says it all really. BTW, I traded LG53 for 23k at 46k, now back up for 23k at 89k! |

Hi, yes that is me with the VO 1M at Derby train station - small world!
You must really like the M5, always felt like I couldn't afford to run one, but a high revving V10 must be music compared to the 1M. Where did you see LG53 for £23k? I have to say that I wouldn't pay that for it, it was definitely showing signs of age and mileage! |
