Totally different cars, M5 is an awesome family barge that can be thrown around, the CSL is a car to be thrown around that also retains some practicality.
I've owned the CSL and driven a friend E39 M5 often enough.

I owned an e39m5 for 4 years and the CSL now for 5 years
m5 was without doubt the best car I ever owned.

Not an E39 but I had a E60 M5 for a few years and I too would rate that as the best car I ever owned. I dont think you really can compare them together tbh, both built for purpose and both excellent at their specific roles. |

![]() CSL is far more alive but compromised from a day-to-day perspective compared to the M5 but they are 2 of the best cars I've ever owned. Cheers, Phil |

Well, i am about an hour and half away from the csl, so will find out soon how it compares, the A68 from Edinburgh back home should be a good proving ground!

I'm sure you won't regret choosing the CSL. Only had mine since feb but so far can't see me ever selling it.
A68 is a cracking route for a first drive. I had to suffer the M1. ![]() Are you local to Newcastle then? Ian

Its Epic. Truely epic.
Not local to Newcastle, I live in Stamford Lincs, so had to drive a bit further home! |
