If you can be arsed waiting around for one, just keep searching on eBay and you'll get one for a decent price in the end. There's usually quite a few for sale, although at the moment, as you said, there's only a couple and they do look expensive as I think they're from dealers.

Are the single slot CD stereos from any e46 suitable OR is it only the one from an e46 M3 that will fit/work??

Any E46 headunit - you can even use one with a cassette deck for that retro feel.

The very early units have a different connector on the back so might need a converter cable, but anything from post-2001 should be OK.
