ball joint or bearings ? I thought I had a noise from the rear last year and it was front ball joint changed under warranty

had similar noise with older e46m3 i had, was the diff oil. dealer put in additive to oil (or changed it - can't remember) then noise went away.

csl does it occasionally now, will get it looked at at some point

Excellent guys, thanks for the input. That's put my mind at rest somewhat. I'll have the oil changed, the seals/ balljoints inspected and report back.
