Gorilla, I'm surprised at the different exhaust solutions on the Merc (in the undercut sides) and BMW (out rear bumper). Is that not regulated? I think the Audi has the same solution as Merc?

Hi,
Alex- BMW MS are dis-advantaged for the 2012 DTM. Lack of Data. Even with the Reg Changes Merc/Audi have so much more Data and Knowledge from the previous years that I personally think BMW could well find it very hard going. The Exhaust point, well spotted, is one of several, and even though Engine power, saftey Cell, Rear Spoiler, Gross Weight etc are very much regulated, its all the 'Data' from the past years that prevents making what can be a wrong and very costly inherent design, that you have to live with all season long. Its very similar to Ferrari's problem this year in that designing the front of the Car for Pull Rod as well as the rear, following on from Red Bull's success with their rear Pull Rod set up, Ferrari discovered that getting it to work is a nightmare. Pull rod is not new to F1, and has the advantage of allowing the suspension to be set down lower in car, but in most cases takes a lot longer to Dial into the car, which the current F1 testing rules now work against. The other issue discussed is that in that current F1 Cars run a very high nose it makes the angle of a 'pull rod' on a tangent that makes the Crank bells difficult to get effective damper travel for the suspension settings. Again some of the best brains in the business not having any previous Data or the time [Regs] to create their own. Ironically Ferrari also have a downforce issue caused by their exhaust positioning, which some think will see the exhaust moved further forward so that the 'aero' seals the rear diffuser. It will be interesting to see how BMW and Ferrari respond to these respective issues. Regards, The Gorilla. |

Yes, was very surprised and slightly confused by the BMW exhaust as using the undercut side floor for exhaust blowing has been common place in DTM for some years. I know the external rear wing flick-ups have gone now but there is an obvious use to seal the floor nicely to speed up under-car air flow through the diffuser.
Ref F1, was I thinking an odd decision for Ferrari to go front pullrod. Their exhaust solution looked wrong from the outset. Those solutions with the slot exhausts are very interesting. I think they are using the airflow to direct the exhaust gases to seal the diffuser at high speed, as you say from much further forward than Ferrari. Then at lower speed it blows the rear wheel hub winglets. Ferrari missed a trick here by maybe only concentrating on the later. I also think the use of exhaust gases from much further forward has been underestimated by the FIA. Everyone expected rapid cooling and dissipation of the gases would have negligible effect. It seems that was wrong!

My obsession with racecar technology runs deep. I am truely ashamed to say I am a geek of the highest order with this sort of thing!! Therapy required here please.
