I thought when auto mode was selected it displayed a "D" next to the gear number display, then tap the gear stick to the right once more to engage, manual.

Move the gear lever to the right, so that 'A' is shown at the bottom of the display, and 's' is shown to the right.

That shows you are in 'A'uto mode, and if you move the gear lever to the right you will put in 'S'equental (manual) mode.

My car shows 'D' when in auto.

IIRC:
earlier CSL's show 'R' reverse, 'O' neutral and 'A' auto/drive
later models (or software updated) show 'R' reverse, 'N' neutral and 'D' auto/drive.

Never knew there was a change. Everyday's a school day!!!

Mine will be having an Insp II soon, and I will be geting all the latest software done so I wonder if it will change to R/N/D??

It won't.

I've got the original display too - I've got the latest software and a new SMG ECU - makes no difference to what it shows.
