Bonnet switch?

At Chatsworth yesterday having watched a mate compete in this Escort. Wife and two kids in car pleased to be out of pouring rain. Try to start car and nothing! Played around with gear lever and impossible to get into neutral, just R and 1 showing - gearbox seeming to get confused. About to give up and call RAC (wife and kids getting agitated in steamed up car) when remembered reading on forums about cars being disabled by bonnet switch. Opened bonnet, closed bonnet, car started. Emergency averted - thank god for forums!

The strange thing was that until I pulled the bonnet lever, it was not obvious that the bonnet was ajar - no lever sticking out of front grill.
