My standard E46 M3 had the same,but that was built in 2002,i thought they had changed to cd by the time the CSL was built.

Looking through the original invoice it seems the first owner specced it like that. It wasn't a deal breaker for me - as long as the wiring loom is fine I could always just change it to the usual business cd player setup.
