I'm just saying tread depth isn't the only factor you should consider when buying secondhand tyres:- age, and usage, have a bearing too.....

I know your right in many respects, but it just comes down to the fact that it's much easier buying 2 set's or used CUP's per year at £400-600 than 1 set at £1100-1200 a year

And besides - this is my first set on the CSL so until I get my camber settings and tyre pressure/temperature's under control on track days i'm better of practicing with part worns.

Like Shimmy said it's better to goose a £400 set than a brand new £1100 set just because your learning... he has said in numerous posts recently that if he knew what he knows now (re temp's and pressures) when he bought his CSL he would have saved £1000's in wasted CUP's.

Are you the new 'CSL Register Shimmy Appreciation Society President' by any chance?

Regarding camber, Simpson will set your car up expertly - of that i am sure.

I also doubt if he'll sell you a set of Cups for £400 - unless of course they were made circa 1982, have around 2mm of tread and you have 'volunteered' to join his Man Train in return for his deal!

what you say is partly right Jim but also you can rag a set of new Cups very easily in one trackday if you are not careful and ruin them with regards to lifespan. In a perfect world buying new is best BUT if you factor in all the times when you take a new set and wear the inside edge coz our camber aint quite right or pressures are a bit too high or temps are a bit hot in summer, they are not always very good value.

Once you have learnt how to look after them properly and drive without massive understeer or a loose back end then maybe.....

Mashing an older set of Cups was my logic in buying older tyres being a relative track newbie.

I agree that the ring and track specialists on here (including you Rob) it makes sense to steer clear, but a set of 'shimmy specials' makes alot of sense if your still learning / setting up the car.

Am now not going to make it to Germany this year as the wife has decided on an extension and need the space back in the garage.

No, your right Rob he is not the only member on here to have driven on track, but he's probably gone through the most set's of cups and looking at his lap times, he knows a fair bit about setup and tyre management.

Plus, it just so happens that Shimmy's given me some honest advice when I've enquired about buying bit's from him, so this is all I have to go on.

Of course I could start a thread every time I've had a question, but take this thread for example - I've asked for some cup's and it's turned in to a whole lot of man train discussion.

Whilst this is all good banter, when I've asked Shimmy a question he's given me straight talking advice from his first hand experiences which is helpful when thats just what I need.

re camber, yes defiantly - Simpson's will set it up perfectly - of that I have no doubt, I guess I was referring more to pressure and temp management.

And I said £400-600 as a rough guide, he hasn't given me a price yet.

Again, I admit I have made a bit of a rod for my own back - I've come on here looking for a CSL, bought some Intrax from Shimmy so he's the only person I've met and hence the person who's been able to give me the most helpful advice. So yes, when I'm refering to advice I've been given on here most of the time it has been 'Shimmy said'

Yes it all makes sense in my position I think, and I would go for your set, but at 8 years old I'm just worried that i'll have to get alot of heat into them for any sort of grip which is not too bad on track but could cause a few scary moments on the road.

Still thinking about them though...



Sorry for the rant, I know it's all good banter on here but I just want to make the point that I don't want to become a 'mini Shimmy', but I do appreciate the advice he has given me.

After all, twas shimmy who told me about my CSL - i'd still be looking otheriwse
