You mean were the camshafts are usually laid on is worn uneven? Ouch!
New head and camshafts?
Were you using the recommended oil.
Lets hope you get it fixed soon.

Bmw fitted a new engine in the end with the ware in the bores and the head needing changed So all i have to do now is run it in for 1200 miles

Hi Mark,

How often did you change the oil ?
I change the oil in mine every 5k kms.

Let me share an official response from bmw for such cases...

Customer observation:
- Idling complaints: idling erratic, vibrations, shaking.
- Engine misfires while the vehicle is in motion.
- Starting difficulties, traced back to "jamming" HVC elements and thus poor or no
compression.
- Engine warning lamp lit.
- Engine damage after start attempt.

Service observation:
- VANOS faults stored in the fault code memory of the DME control unit.
- During an engine oil service, it is found that the engine oil has thickened/formed into sludge.
- Camshafts worn.
- As a result of stiff camshafts, there is a possibility of mechanical damage to the valve gear (especially
during an engine start).

Vehicles concerned:
All E-series with petrol engine without option ... (maintenance interval level 2 coding = oil service interval
12,000 km)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cause
Poor fuel quality promotes faster oil ageing and thus a thickening of the engine oil
(oil sludging, predominantly in the cylinder head and sump).

One from the tasks that need to be performed ->

- Change the coding to option .... (maintenance interval level 2 coding = shortening of
oil service interval to 12,000 km):
