Default Laptop Recco

Guys

POS Vaio screen has packed up after just over 3 years..

Any reccos on a cheap, £300-400 laptop.

Used for web, music, pics and and appliance pc for remoting into work PC. Need decent memory / processing power.

Not brand sensitive, but people are suggecting Toshiba and HP to me..

Suggestions ?

Something I might be able to help on

Sony,Tosh,HP,Dell and Lenovo are the brands you should look at all Tier one PC Manu-

I have had a quick look on Ebay between 300-400 quid and there is a good selection of the above brands for sale with 2gb/4gb Memory etc.

If as posted you are not a heavy user look to get a Laptop with 2gb memory. If you need more you can check out the below link which is a memory company and you can see how much it is to upgrade at a later stage as you will get more for your bucks with a 2gb system and it is a easy way to upgrade.

However as in your original post you say your screen has packed up you could with a little help diagnose the actual problem part and replace the part which in turn wil be cheaper than £400. This is as long you can use a screwdriver

PS what model Sony have you got.

Hope this helps.

My power socket stopped working on my Lenovo and I bought a Chinese eBay part for £6 and fitted it myself, bobs you uncle......

I only lost use of 3 keys and the space bar, as keypad was touch difficult to get back in

Cheers Chris. Model is VGN-FW31J.

Boots up fine but the screen is red and slightly fuzzy. It will sometimes display login page but will flicker if the screen moved back/forth. Need to tap it lightly from time to time for it to come back on. Can still use it but the colours aren't displaying well, there is no good definition to characters.

Not impressed - I recall it being about 800 quid.

Am not PC hardware savvy tbh, so would prob cause more damage than good with a screwdriver so need someone to look at it. If you're in Kent, I'll drop it over for you to take a look at it with some beer tokens

Just don't go through my Internet history

Can sort something out if its your own hard earnt cash and not works and you are around Bromley area.

However have a little trust it can be possible one of two problems one is the screen which if your description is accurate then I am 90% sure it is and below is a link to a example cost of screen however it can be the inverter board (which is around £50). Also included are a couple of links on how to replace a laptop screen (tbh 99% are generic in design and instuctions can match several designs) but the basics show how quick and easy it is.

However if you really not too sure then just give us a shout. One other point to make is weigh up the cost as the laptop will last another couple years max as a machine before its a grinder and becomes a doorstop
