Miraculously now that they have switched to Shell as their oil supply partner - this is now all of a sudden good enough for the engine

However, I wouldn't deviate from the BMW OEM choice of LT2 (Catsrol Syntrans B75) as not all 75w80s are the same. The hot and cold viscosity seems to vary quite considerably and it has been anecdotally reported that the gear change can become difficult with other oils.
