I have a 996 turbo, currently running about 670hp. As you would expect it is very quick indeed, mine is running a Europipe stage 2 exhaust which helps a bit with the sound. It handles well enough for any road driving but for a quick Sunday morning blast I generally prefer the CSL, it feels more connected, more immediate, and can be pushed harder on acceleration without getting to silly speeds. My 996 will do 60-100mph in 3s in 3rd gear, so during 'normal' road driving you are never on the throttle for more than 2s when on boost. I haven't driven a 997 but from what I have heard from friends who have owned and driven both extensively, the 997 is another step more sanitised and refined than the 996. Great if that is what you want from a car.
Throttle response is obviously very different. Individual butterflies right at the intakes will always be better than a single throttle with a large plenum and two big turbos to spin up, mine should be improved on that front soon as I am getting a larger engine and different ECU which can do rolling anti-lag to keep the boost up through gear changes.
I found the bodywork design on the 997 to be a bit too fussy for my liking, particularly on the later version, with extra lights peppered across the front of the car.
