Not exactly. I'm no expert but as I understand it, you need the 'right' amount of stretch.... Too much and then the sidewalls cannot give you any compliance, too little and the tyre rolls around too much...
So 225 on 8.5 feels good ( on the road - not driving too fast) but I think it will lose grip on track before a car with 225 on 8"
235 is perfect on 8.5
255 on 8.5 will give you more braking ( as it's wider) but at the expense of cornering ( tyre is too wide to be held in place 'correctly' )
It depends on the brand, the suspension set up and how you like to drive too - this is what I think - and that could all be wrong
