Tyres
What's the crack with the CSLs tyre choice?
I know from investigation that when new the only choice was cups, but what about this day and age? Is there now a good, all weather tyre? Jason |
The nomex underwear crew will be along shortly with the cups all year round suggestion :hahaha:
I have two sets of wheels - one with cups, the other with PS2's as it's my only car :thumbs: |

Well my two cents, having used cups wet and dry on the road and track I would say go for Kumho ecsta v70a for the track, I found them to be better, last longer and cheaper. Steering seems a little sharper too. And they don t go off.
For the road i have used PS2, vredestein, GY F1 Asymmetrics, and conti's.. I can honestly say that the GY are by far the best!! In the wet they are sublime and in the dry they are brilliant as well. Vreds are terrible, take a long time to bed in and then aren t that great. PS2 too expensive and GY are better and last longer. GY also pretty good on track for a few fast laps of silverstone i found. |
Dry + track day: Cup tyres
Daily driver + wet track days: PS2s PS2s will also cope well with dry track days but not quite up to Cup standard. |
Firstly I presume you are on about tires on standard CSL rims?
Track Tyres are limited to Michelin Cup and Toyo R888. Cups are by far the best on standard CSL. You used to be able to get Pirelli Corsa Race in similar sizes to CSL but now they have been discontinued, replaced by Pirelli Trofeo which are more like the Pirelli Corsa System Tyres (more road orientated) On road a whole load of choice. Michelin PS2 are OEM and probably best all round tyre but Pirelli Pzero, Goodyear, Falken, etc etc all have a place (the bin!!! IMHO) |

mine sits on cups all year round, its not an every day car so i can manage. Expect the odd moment in the winter or wet :bigcry:

Cups for the Summer, without a shadow of a doubt.
For the rest of the year, and I know I'm going to get shot hear judging by Shimmy's comment about them, I use Falken FK452's. A whole set is only £550 and I've done well over 10K miles with them including a Track day and a dozen 1/4 mile runs and they're still legal. Were good on track, did get too hot quite quickly but on the road I can't fault them. Similar tread design as Goodyears, but without the price. I had PS2 on my last M3, thought they were too hard IMO, F1's wore down really quickly for some reason and then tried T1R's which just didn't look right. Right chunky tyre. Not so good in snow, but then what tyre is apart from dedicated Winter rubber? There I said it. Now I'm going to find some cover to take. |
Im running Cups in summer and PS2's in winter although the car was laid up for most of last years.
