E36 M3 Evo

Looking to get one of these as a daily drive cheap shitter to do the nursery run!

Anyone know of a nice one for sale or have any experience of these and any of their issues? I presume wishbones, bushes and Vanos are the common snags?

A 328 Coupe would suffice too i suppose...

Buy the 3 litre non EVO less issues.

Have a look at a 30.L M3 Rob,great car, less issues, better 5 speed box, than the notchy 6 speed in the Evo,not much in it in performance, and no Vanos issues,i used to have a black one a few years ago, pretty much bullet proof.;)

If it was me I'd be slightly nervy about either E36 M3 as a rat car - as potential bills could be high IMHO (I ran an Evo for a while, which was pretty solid to be fair, but poss not so many of these about nowadays in good shape)

IMHO E36 328i likely to be cheaper to run/insure/fuel and perhaps owned by less of a boy racer/chav... E46's are pretty cheap also. (and much better in a crash)

Depends what out there and what turns up tho..

My rat cars have tended to be old Golf's - have a couple of lovely mk2's at the mo! (the 1.3 doesn't quite have the speed of an M3 though, with a mighty 55bhp ;-) .. but I do find it strangely enjoyable to drive... almost the complete opposite to the CSL.

Hi Rob
I have owned 11 e36 M3s not a lot goes wrong
Vanos is an issue with them you can tell let the car tick over open the bonnet and give it a rev when the revs drop you will here a rattel slowing down if it does the vanos or the vanos gears are on there way out.

I liked the 3.2 evo over the 3.0 better car to drive and better on fuel
rear trailing arm bushes go on them if they feel lose at the rear
also top shock mounts are crap £21 each not a big problem.

black leather is the best as the silver leather does not wear well

I had 1 convertabile but its not me would not buy another

There are some great e36s out there but there is also a lot of dogs :banghead:

This was my fav e36 M3 Ac Schnitzer only 3 in the UK

I'm the owner of this M3 - it's going to be for sale at the end of the month, I need to retax and MOT it, and stick some new Eagle F1's on the front.

It's quite heavily modified, power is about 320bhp, and thanks to the fact it's about 70kgs lighter than standard it makes pace with an E46 M3. I set out to make it a fast road M3, not a track M3, sadly I never finished it, all that remained was the interior, I wanted 2 reclining buckets for the CSL look, but sadly it's still got an interior I put in as a stop gap measure - it's a cloth 318 interior, it's still perfectly funtional. When the interior was out I also removed most of the sound deadening. It is noticeably faster than a standard M3, the handling and grip levels are very impressive, the engine is extremely responsive between 2000rpm and 8000rpm.

Here's a list of the mods:

Carbon fibre CSL style Airbox
K&N cone filter
H&H Alpha-N ECU and Vanos chips (1000rpm idle – 8000rpm rev limiter)
Iridium Engineering Vanos seal kit
Milltek exhaust
Denso Iridium spark plugs
Fan & AC delete
F1 Racing 7.4kg flywheel
F1 Racing Stage 2 clutch
AP Adjustable Coilovers
BMW X-brace
Ultra Racing front and rear strut braces
YAT camber adjustable top mounts
Z3 reinforcement plates
BMW M3 Evolution discs
Performance Friction Pads
Goodridge Braided clutch and brake hoses with Dot 5.1 Fluid
Polished M3 Evolution alloys
Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 tyres 225 up front, 245 rear

The car has a couple of parts replaced over the last year for maintainance rather than mods:
2 new lambdas
New air temp sensor
New water temp sensor and sender
Couple of bulbs

The car does have some negative points (other than the low rent interior)
Slight buble on the nearside rear arch, it’s not speading at all, and not very noticeable.
MPG isn’t as good as a standard M3, I average about 16 in town, and 27 on the motorway.
The spare wheel is a 3.0l motorsport rim, not an Evo rim. (same style but has BMW MOTORSPORT writen on it, where as the others do not)

The price will be £5,500.
