So the gases coming from the crankcase to the intake, pass from this small tank.
The oil that is contained get's liquified (which you can drain every now and then).
So... this oil doesn't go in the intake of your car, the cylinderhead, the pistons etc etc.

I run one in my R1 (Yamaha racing part).
I think I will get one for the CSL.

I would be surprised if the guys that race the CSLs, don't have one.

PS : I have heard all kinds of myths, that engines blow up, they don't have lubrication in the combustion chamber etc.
My R1 is still alive and kicking ;-)

Hi,

AlexK- I run a small oil catch tank on the
E30 M3 /S54 but not on the CSL.

If you ever look inside your intake plenum there will
be oil deposits around the inside of it.

I believe BMW vent back from the Crankcase to the
plenum for Emissions, where the oil vapor gets
sucked back into the intake, but after the air filtre
for obvious reasons.

Its better to run a Catch tank, and something which
I will do on the CSL during the winter.

Regards,

The Gorilla.

As Mr Gorilla says, its to do with emissions, they are I believe not allowed to vent to atmosphere any more. Causes all types of problems where breathers split, (different cars but we are seeing problems on mercedes with this) drawing in unmetered air, not as big issue on csl as it does not run maf/air mass.
