Front splitters paint..

Im joking. But has anyone had success in the refurb of them?

NZ_M3 10-11-2011 10:29 PM

Yep .... sand back (but not all the way to bare carbon, otherwise it's a pain the butt to reclear again) then reclear with appropriate hardener - will be as good as new.

bryce 10-11-2011 10:30 PM

btw, tried to PM you regarding something else but had to email instead

Yeah not sure what's going on there, have tried deleting loads of messages already but the box is still showing 100% full??

Maybe I've lost my member privilege :bigcry:

email's quicker anyhow, aviemore.tom@xtra.co.nz

edit: ... figured it out, my subscription to the website ran out

sailorbaz 11-11-2011 06:30 AM

I had the same problem with the PM's, I think there's been a server upgrade or something I don't know, but the allowance has dropped big time. Maybe the member privilege has dropped off...something I never thought of.

There's a couple of threads on here showing how to refurb them yourself Bryce, a decent bodyshop should be able to do a good job with them too.

Simpson Motorsport 'rebuilt' two sets of badly damaged splitters for me recently (3 out of 4 had bad cracks/chunks missing!)

One set were made to look 'as new' whilst the other set were painted black as you would have been able to see the repairs but they still look very good as a spare set.

Top work by Julian and their new spray shop

Place in Solihull did mine for 90 quid and they still look like new. They can also repair the roof properly too if required.

BTW, in my experience, don't bother putting film on them. The minute you get a decent stone hitting the carbon, the film punctures and retains any water / moisture and they look 100% worse.

Do you have the details of the place in Solihull? I have a small stone chip to the roof I could do with a look over.

I have a set of OEM splitters if anyone is interested.

Apparently BMW are charging £350 each these days, what a total rip off.

Sytner (Sheffield) bodyshop did mine and although not damaged only stone chipped lacquer I gave them the instructions from link on here and they did a super job. Chartwells Derby are capable too as they have top carbon guy who rebuilds damaged front ends of Fezzas etc.. So it is possible.

shimmy 20-02-2012 10:08 PM

I spoke to Simpsons today about this and as they now have a paint shop and spray booth plus a specialist painter who knows Carbon Fibre they say the can do these easy peasey and have done a few alread with no issues.

Good to know! :supz:

shane@mbtech 20-02-2012 10:11 PM

To be fair, its only wetsanding then lacquer. Any bodyshop should be able to accomodate.

Its not voodoo magic. ;)

However, not over sanding is a skill (machine sanding can go straight thru the CF) and also applying the right lacquer isn't always done.

I should know!

Yeh, buts you be an amatuer. :hahaha::hahaha:

Sticky Mickey the ducati race carbon King did mine.

Who in their right mind, would machine sand a small trim like that:whistle:

Will had a mate of ours do his full ralliart carbon front splitter on his Evo, it looked better than it was when new:thumbs:

I can confirm they do a great job too. They repaired a couple of stone chips on my roof as well as making a set of splitters look like new again whilst repairing a completely fooked set to be a spare track day set.

Highly recommended
