Fun investment car thoughts

So that I don't get told off for polluting a thread again, I thought I would start a new one. I am always on the lookout for cars which are interesting to own and drive, whilst not costing a fortune, and with any luck going up in value. My personal preference is for cars from about 2005 or before, my current cars go in age from a 1989 Mercedes 300SL to a 2004 996 turbo. What are your thoughts on cars to look at. My current suggestions are:

BMW 8 series
Mercedes 190E Cosworth

Also suggested so far by nw99 have been

2009 997 turbo
Escort Cosworth
Elise S1

Love the 8 series but its not cheap to keep them running with all the Electronic gizmos.

Audi urquattro would fit your bill too

I'd scratch the S1 Elise. There are just too many of them. You won't lose money but you'll not win big either. An S1 Exige is a better bet. You can still pic them up for mid 20's if you are quick.

Trying to identify cars that haven't yet risen much in value but have engineering integrity, rarity and can actually be used is key for me:

R53 Mini GP
R129 SL600
There's also a car called an E46 M3, which I hear is very good, and looks to be terrific value.

what budget ?

I'm convinced, if you can find a nice early Porsche 996 3.4 C2 with manual gearbox for less than £15K then it will be a safe place for your money. You see very few nice ones coming up for sale which has always been a good sign that it wil be sort after in the future

cslsuperfan 08-01-2016 08:57 PM

E46 M3

E36 M3

E30 325i Sport in Dolphin Grey. £5-£6K for a bobby dazzler

Z3M coupe

All of the above are fun cars with pedigree. All reasonably priced with a healthy resale.

A genuine E46 M3 with BMWSH is fast becoming a 20K car!!!

nw99 09-01-2016 08:18 AM

Lotus Sunbeam
Vauxhall Chevette HS
Elise S1
997 turbo gen 1.5 manual.

thegingerninja 09-01-2016 06:38 PM

How about this puppy:
Clk63-black with 2yr MB warranty

MisterCorn 15-01-2016 07:21 PM

I don't think that is really investment potential, too new for my tastes. Currently looking for an early 996 C2 with sensible mileage. Should be a bit of fun.

Good taste mate - also been watching these. Sound mega, but I hear horror stories re: running costs.

Many of the 1980's & 90's cars have already jumped in values over past 12 months and no doubt will continue to do so - save any 'crash'

It goes without saying that any 'interesting' car must also be one you wanted in the past and one you will enjoy owning. There are always many very low mileage, few owner 'old' cars under the 'classic' banner but, like vintage cars, simply do not float my boat.

Secondly Condition is paramount.

That said then Limited numbers is still a major key IMO so check out :-
Peugeot Rallye (205, 206 & 306 variants) - these seem rare and not too daft £££ when they pop up.

Other than that stick to the BMW variants of the e30 325iSport & M3's, e36 M3 GT, e46 M3 CSL & 1M (not being bias at all :hahaha:) also the e28 M5, and e24 M6. All tried, tested and sure fire collectables so when the day comes to off-load there will be some buyers out there.

In meantime enjoy whatever you own

That CLK BS price seems very reasonable to be honest, especially with the warranty.

Had a 190E Cosworth. Boy oh boy did it consume a lot of oil, relatively slow but a lovely car to "drive"

E30 325i
Z4M Coupe
Z1
Alfa SZ
205GTi
Porsche 968CS

They would be my suggestions for a fun/investment balance

nw99 28-01-2016 06:52 AM

M5 Touring 2007 onwards BMW only built 221 cars .

Bought an early 996 C2 to do a few jobs on. It is a 1999MY car which is the very last of the cable operated throttle cars. I will change it back to the original orange indicatirs and swap the interior from blue to black. Just need to get my E36 M3 finished first.

Just under 60k miles, paid a little under £14k. I already have a full black interior to go in and the amber lights, by the time I have sold the old lights, changed the plate and sold the interior it will have probably cost me a little over £14k.

Very smart. Last of the Mezgers? I can't spot a 997.15 from a 997.2 I'm afraid.

Agree last of the Mezgers , It's only the interior with PCM 3 that differs and manual !
