Hi All

Just back from a viewing on a vehicle, and this has raised some questions:

Test drive went fine- a good 20 minutes (nice noise!)

Gear changes were fairly brutal in S5 (or was it S6) in sport mode, although they were smooth if you came off the throttle slightly before changing.

bearing in mind it was circa -2C, I noticed that the water temp gauge didn't make it to half way - it was more like halfway between the top of the blue cold and the first dot (first and second dots for normal temp)
Oil temp was at the halfway point (or just under)
Normal? or potential issues (thermostat or something?)

Drivers seat didn't tip forward to allow access into the back - seller said they would fix this

one side of the front headlamps had condensation (non xenons) - would this just be a seal to put right?

The rear seats had quite a few scuff marks, mainly where the seat belts hook up to seat bases - looks like the thin paint had worn off, only cosmetic, but is this typical for CSL's?

Car was mid 50's with regards to mileage. Has full BMWSH and up until last month was under Mondial warranty.

Would the above issues be typical, bearing in mind this is the first I have seen.

Thanks in advance

The gear change is supposed to be brutal. You shouldn't lift off as it slips the clutch and wears it out!

As for the rest, I'm not sure, it depends how picky you are I suppose. Maybe go view another for comparison

Hi Deano,
Which one was this that you went to see?

It was the SG one NJ had

Temp gauge is not right....it should get to temp easily within 20 mins. it should stay in the middle and only move very slightly if at all. I’d want that sorted

That was my thought - all the cars I've had get up to the centre of the temp gauge fairly quickly (and many manufacturers employ a fiddle factor to ensure that it stays there, unless temps really do begin to go awry)

Could be as simple as a thermostat allowing water to run to the radiator when not required, but that would result in lower engine efficiencies and reduced fuel consumption.

Enough to put me off? I'm not sure but at 27K i would have expected better...

Anyone with the itch to sell - please PM - beer aswell as cash awaits:beer:

Nick has a good relationship with BMW Oxford
i'm sure he will rectify all the niggles through BMW

you have the option of extending the warranty
so wait the 31 days and take it to bmw for a bit of goodwill haggling
they may be willing to help on the trim issues
i know its not strictly covered but i have had a steering wheel and sill plates replaced in the past. not necessarily covered but got done because the dealer was accommodating.:-D

You would have thought the previous owner, with a warranty, would have sorted all the niggles before selling ??

If its got the tropical/motorsport stat in, then I found they run cooler, might have this fitted, especially if it was used on track.

In his sixties apparently, may mean he was less 'picky' so long as the car drove fine.

Regarding the wear on the plastic on the rear seats - any proven CSLregister remedies?

It looks like the seat belt buckle and clip wears these areas easily.

He's showing an SB one as well on PH, or has it got to be an SG one?

I've often thought of putting some strips of alcantara there to protect the trim, but didn't want to f- ck it up.

Don't think he's got the SB one anymore, just two SG ones.

Didn't spend to much time looking at it - it was parked on his lawn.
41k miles and £29.5k

Rear seats were in better nick (tho' still marked) different tyres on front and rear axles, which always looks odd IMHO.

Just a thought. The rubbing on the rear seat could be due to where a baby seats buckle fastens ? Taking his grandson for a spin ???

The other one did have cslregsiter decals in the rear side window

Could be, would explain the smaller marks on the front seat backs.

J2LTB - Staffordshire - local to me I'm near Jnct 12 M6.

It's a 10 year old car and the trim has a weird paint and is easily marked on the seat backs and the plastic bits of the rear seat. Unless you find a car that's never been driven they're all like this. In the grand scheme of things to worry about this is doesn't figure.

it was a factor when i bought my one,

the marks on the plastic really make it look tired in the back,

id keep searching if i were you sounds unloved to me, if your putting that kind of cash down its got to be right hasnt it !

it needs michelin cups or super sports allround, FBSH, and to be running spot on.

send shimmy the reg and get some back ground on the car.

be patient my friend all good things....................

Thanks for all the comments thus far.
Unloved did sum it up I suppose - being the first one I had seen, I was perhaps expecting a more cherished example.

My last high value used car was a Audi RS6 Plus at £23K and was mint in comparison, main dealer supplied and younger at 4 years old.

Have still not ruled this SG one out yet, I reckon with a couple of days cleaning and detailing I could make it 'more loved'

Will PM Shimmy for some info. It was owned by a CSL member in the past Weyzi.

There is a Youtube clip on here taken from a Cayman S at Nurburgring with the car infront.

What's the drivers side seat bolster like ?

That normally starts to wear and if fine then that's a bonus..

The front seat bolsters were OK, the fabric just needed cleaning.
The Carbon fibre internally was also pretty mark free.

Regarding the marks and paint removal on the rear seats, has anyone removed them and attempted a tidy up - I was thinking if the all of the paint could be rubbed off (not thinking it generally very tough) leaving the matt plastic behind.

Think of the weight savings!

Are the marks on the rear seats on the seat backs or on the seats or both? If the seat back is dropped it will come into contact with the rear seat belt fixing point, pushing it out of the way and in consequence can cause damage to both elements of the seat.

Backs of the front seats are too easily scuffed, the general consensus is to have a CF skin fabricated and attached using 3M double sided, over the existing to afford a little more protection also visually it would be more in keeping with the interior.

Numerous threads have been done regarding these issues and the possibilities are being considered. 'Mark CSL' with carbon trims, 'NZ_M3' with CF rear console and 'gazzzar' has undertaken a repaint of certain elements, but if I'm not mistaken these threads may confined to the 'Members' section and may not be accessible to all register contributors.

Image attached for info, but clearly shows the seat belt anchor points, and gives a good indication of the scuffing that could occur if the seat backs were to be dropped, without them tucked away in their pockets.

i spoke to nick before buying my car from a private chap he was really helpfull and a nice bloke but i felt the cars were well used and not really looked after, why would somone sell there car to nick and not sell it private ???
basicaly they use them hard and dont really look after them with love then nick takes them tarts up the paint work and the front flippers uses them for a few weeks / months and sells them on with a mark up on top.
dont get me wrong im not saying they are all bad but that what i saw when i went there.

i agree to some extent. i bought my 1st csl off NJ, 10K 2004 £38K, it was a 1 owner and mint. that said i've looked at more than 6 examples at NJ since and they were all in need of TLC-
some examples of faults-
cracked screen(major)
front flipper damage/missing
csl alloys requiring refurb
very tired paintwork

these are minor but premium tarrifs should reflect the cars overall condition. NJ is a decent chap no question but he is in the csl business for economic reasons. i think most of us are much more emotionally attached to dear cesil /SG or SB(slower one:-D!!)

There's probably a bit of supply vs demand influence on this too - the greater the demand, the less effort is needed to shift stock. Demand certainly seems to have gone up quite a bit in 12 months.
