I changed my rear number plate on saturday and underneath it on the boot lid is a BMW sticker with the last 7 digits of my chassis number on it......

That's probably the allocation No. assigning that boot to that chassis during the build.
I haven't got one as I would assume that it should have been removed after fitting.
If someone were to steal you plate, they could potentially steal a lot more if you have left it in place is still in place.
The last 7 digits are effectively the keys to the kingdom.

I suppose 1 advantage is now knowing the cars never had a rear end shunt lol....

Anyone can read the chassis number through the front screen. I assume that's what your refering to.

This is quite standard for BMWs (at least E46 that I remember).
All of them have such a sticker to easily identify the car during transportation (along with others).
Was there a bar code as well ?

Its very common on BMW's my E36 has exactly the same sticker behind the plate. Nice touch when you take the plate off and realise the boot is original.

You'll find the chassis number in a number of places on the e90 M3 too. Under regs plate and lately I noticed a sticker on the lower rear wishbone of all places.
