You are all so wrong. Know your history. Modern drivers have their place but they aren't in this class. In no particular order:

Fangio - no explanation required.
Nuvolari - for Nurburgring 1935 alone but he achieved so much more.
Jim Clark - probably the best of all time.
Senna - best in modern time.
Gilles Villeneuve - best natural talent and the personification of what a racing driver should be.

To continue my stories... When I worked for Honda I won a sale competition in which top 20 salesman from each region went to Goodwood for the day driving everything from the honda hovercraft to the Nsx finishing with a dinner / evening at Goodwood house with eddie jordon, Murry walker & Dave Richards.

The winner (top salesman) got to sit next to Murry Walker (me) and I asked him who was his top driver of all time? He said Prost! Of course I put him straight and told him Senna was the man! Murry was a great bloke and didn't stop talking the whole evening :partyman:

I agree that he did alot for the safety of the sport but I don't rate him as a driver. I think back in those days anyone had a crack at it! One minute a mechanic or engineer next F1 driver??? Unlike Senna for example who was always outstanding from an early age and so focused on himself and winning nothing else mattered!

Hi,

I think its impossible to compare Drivers
from different era's for all the obvious
reasosn so I would go as follows-

Equal 1st-

Nuvolari - Naturally Gifted in a period when 'Testing' was, start engine, stop.

Fangio - Moss was very good, Fangio was better, says it all.

Senna- Wet Lap at Donninton ,in that company, ''where others fear to tread''

4th-

Jochan Rindt- Made uncompetitive Cars competive against the likes of
Hill / Clark/ Hulme, [Schumacher had contractual Team
Orders with his team mates, I expect Hill wished he had to]

5th -

Gilles Villenue- The Racer's racer, could drive anything he was
given, and always way beyond its limits.

Others in the frame, Mansell, very brave racer, but just a
shade to much drama about the car, Prost, quick, tactile
but alas French, Von Tripps, flamboyant, talented almost
to quick, and his vision gave the Schmachers their start,
Stewart, almost to canny, very clever driver but the lure of
money was to strong to resist, Clarke, could drive anything
very, very fast, but just to nice a Gentleman, which sadly
contributed to his untimely death.

The Gorilla.

I'm a massive Senna fan (hence the pic!), and it was an absolute privilege to be at Donnington in '93 and witness what he did there. Especially considering how poor his McLaren was that year. However....

What generally gets forgotten about Monaco 1984 was that Stefan Bellof was actually closing in on Senna and Prost when the race was cancelled. Now I know the car was subsequently deemed to have been running illegally, but knowing what Bellof was capable in a racing car when on-form I'm not sure too much can be read into that. As fast as anyone on his day

As for Prost, not the most exciting of drivers, but if you had to bet your house on someone to bring a car back in one piece then he was your man. 4 titles against serious competition says an awful lot

Hi,

But 'he' did have the FIA with Balestre
Policing and sanctioining everybody else
over that period, not forgetting that the
FIA at the time was also known as the
''Paris Mafia''.

Even poor old Bernie had to mind his 'P's & Q's' in
those days.

Senna was right on the Money about Balestre
and the FIA Estblishment, and everybody knew it,
only Senna at the time would speak out.

Mansell's first year at Ferrari, they gave him
his actual F1 Race Car complete, even with
ECU unlocked, very rare, following year, due to much
''Prostation'' Mansell got a British Racing Green
Fiat.

I still think Prost is unfairly classed as almost a second-class driver now though. He may have been "assisted", and he managed to find himself in the right seat for most of his career, but he was still a properly fast driver

Was never a Mansell fan, but there's no getting away from the fact that he was brave as you like. "Il Leone" sums it up perfectly

Speaking of which, there's a great story in Richard Williams' biography of Ferrari about Nuvolari overtaking a competitor through the forecourt of a petrol station, twice! Measured afterwards, there were only inches to spare either side of the car between the kiosk and the pumps

Hi,

Yes, Nuvolari had calculated that
through the ''Pumps'' was the shorter
route, its a sublime piece of Motorsport
history.

Bit like Senna / Bernie story at Spa,

Extract-

A famous account is at Spa, where Bernie was standing very close to the guardrail at a very fast corner. Lap after lap Senna would edge his car closer and closer to the barrier to "test" the courage of Ecclestone. Ecclestone later described how incredible he had found Senna's car control as he ended up tapping the barrier with the tires at 320km/h (198 mp/h) lap after lap.

I believe the thread title is "Racing Drivers". To me that's drivers of racing cars not rally cars. Besides the two disciplines are so far apart in technique that they very rarely cross.

And Jim Clark average!!! Tell me your joking??

Also, I rate drivers from an era when you had no electronic aids, a clutch and a gear stick far higher than most modern era drivers. Try controlling 400-500bhp and more with 600/650 x 19 cross ply tyres, evil power delivery and Pre-War suspension technology. Then add in very average track surfaces, no run off or safety considerations, cotton driving suits, leather flying caps and goggles at speeds in excess of 175mph. If you drove one today you'd shit yourself at 80mph........trust me.:119:

Jim Clark average. I agree regarding the electronic aids etc but back in the day it wasn't as competitive to become a driver in the first place so those guys were the best of the bunch back then but most didnt work their way through karting, F'Ford, F3 etc? :(

Jim Clark average. I agree regarding the electronic aids etc but back in the day it wasn't as competitive to become a driver in the first place so those guys were the best of the bunch back then but most didnt work their way through karting, F'Ford, F3 etc? :(

These days far more focused / talented drivers

Agree with most of that but Jim Clark still had to work his way up, through hill climbing, sportscars, Formula Junior, etc. before F1. Also, show me a modern F1 driver who won World Championship F1 titles, BTCC in between and won the Indy 500 the same year as he was F1 Champion.

He was a bit special and Senna thought he was the best of the best. I'll take that.;)
