Euro Trip Northern Contingent – Please Queue Here!

Following the pre-Christmas suggestion by the Euro-Trip Management - shimmy: “I would recommend that each group/area set up their own thread in the Events section”

I was eagerly anticipating a more established member posting something for the Northern Crew but nothing to date, they’re probably busy helping the Southerners to pack?

So in their absence, I think the time has now time to stand up and be counted.

The Proposal is as you are all aware for an extended weekend away:
May Bank Holiday, 24th - 28th May, Venue: Munich to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the CSL and Trackday at the Salzburgring.

Getting there; the easiest and most convenient route is probably the P&O Hull - Rotterdam ferry crossing.
I would think that this applies to any members living North of Stoke-on-Trent (arbitrary) and would include any members from North Wales and the Isle of Man as being the closest crossing point to the continent.
This route is also being considered by Irish Members (so good craic to be had by all)

If you choose to travel this route and are not familiar, it's an overnight (10hr.45min) crossing, with P&O Departing Hull at 8-30pm. (be aware that the Check-in closes at 19.00hrs) arrival in Rotterdam at approx. 8.15am. the following morning.
The cost is approx. £258 based on: car, driver only, includes a 2 person cabin (with Dinner on board £291) Return. http://www.ferrysavers.com/

An alternative route for members in Cumbria/Lakes, Durham, Nothumberland, etc. would be the DFDS ferry from Newcastle - Amsterdam (See Scottish Thread: http://www.cslregister.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9442) again an overnighter with 2 person cabin, however this route adds to the crossing time departing at 5.30pm. with arrival at 9.30am. (a later start for the journey to Munich) http://www.dfdsseaways.co.uk/ferry-r...-to-amsterdam/ (http://www.dfdsseaways.co.uk/ferry-routes/holland/newcastle-to-amsterdam/)

Either route leaves approx. a 6hr plus, drive on the other side, to Munich (so a fair bit of sight seeing involved, albeit fleeting) Conclusion: Arrive Munich – whenever?

Note: There are 15mls of Road Works between Junctions 25 and 27 with a speed limit of 50mph being strictly enforced by cameras at ¼ mile intervals, so delays are more than likely. You have been warned! Don’t forget to factor this in to your travel plans.

Members traveling the M62, need to follow the A63 (outskirts of Hull) to the Ferry Port on Hendon Road, the A63 is lined with various petrol stations, several Shell ones adjacent to the end of the 62 with a BP Station almost adjacent to the Port entrance.
I would suggest filling up at some point before boarding, ready for the road ahead. However, the stations closer to the port are more likely to charge premium prices (stating the obvious).

It has already been suggested that we might consider meeting up and enter the port as a group, (what boards together, stays together) reducing the risk of any potential battle scares inflicted by children getting in and out of adjacent vehicles and careless adults with luggage passing.

A suitable staging post, might be a Retail Park, there’s one on the right of the A63 ‘Clive Sullivan Way’ (MacDonald’s) on the outskirts of Hull. Not compulsory but may be prudent.

Any thoughts, observations, suggestions, etc. more than welcomed.

‘The Homecoming – 2013” We’re not just tripping, we’re making history!

The list of Northern attendees starts here:

Your already listed as attending one epic event, trying to kill two birds with one stone, might be a tad much. It's taken me all my time sorting out the dates for this one, never mind Monaco.
As Bounce says approx. 7.35hrs 490mls just might be pushing it, if your thinking of sloping off somewhere :hahaha: during the celebration:thumbs:

The only sensible way to attend both events would be to go direct to Monaco, that's presuming your in a car, and pick us up on the way back, but that's pushing it to the extreme, sense must prevail. It's decision time?

"It's where I first met Jim" :smt055 Sounds like a strong gay scene in Hull :gayfight:

Do you mean the Ferry Inn in Brough, do they have a large enough Car Park to accommodate the assembled multitude? Us, the Irish lads and perhaps Scotts (yet to be decided)

I'm trying to turn my 'Unlikely' status on the main page into a 'Definite' and this route looks interesting to me from Nottingham if I can go.

I normally take the tunnel to Calais but it's a trek to get there, so quite fancy the overnight ferry option, would do a half days work then head up to Hull.

I probably can't do the Salzburg part and would have to head back on the Tuesday. Will also probably have my wife with me and she is not remotely interested in cars, so not sure she'll be going round motor museums...

Now the Christmas and New Year festivities are but a distant memory, it’s time to get serious and turn your thoughts to The Homecoming - 2013” shimmy can’t do everything.

So - Let’s get Ready to Rumble: Issue 1

What do I need to take?
· Passport
· Money (obviously - some Cash in both GBP’s and Euro’s would be good)
· Credit Cards
· Driving License
· Registration Document V5
· Insurance Certificate

What else should I consider before traveling.
Insurances: A "Green Card" your insurers will provide this, it gives you fully comp cover whilst traveling in Europe. Without it you insurance cover is 3rd party only. For CCI insured vehicles contact: Lyndsey.Farmer@towergate.co.uk (Lyndsey.Farmer@towergate.co.uk)

Trackday Insurance: Inform your insurer of your plans by email, and seek their advice. They require a minimum of at least 2 days notice prior to any 'Trackday' event.
I would however suggest that you emphasize that this is not a free for all, it is a sponsored event with vehicles and driver tuition provided by BMW (perhaps a bit tongue in cheek, but not a blatant lie).
(Taking out any additional insurance is entirely up to you, but at c. £250 a day, 'track' cover is going cost ??? especially with an excess in the region of 5k, and a maximum pay out of around 20k.
Draw your own conclusion!)

European Breakdown Cover: I’m not sure if the BMW extended Warranty covers this. So it may be prudent to seek either advice from Mondial Assistance (UK) Ltd. Tel: 020 8681 2525 http://www.bmw-warranty.co.uk/Pages/Home.aspx (http://www.bmw-warranty.co.uk/Pages/Home.aspx) or source alternative cover from CCI, AA, etc.

Holiday Insurance: approx. £20+, If you are not bothered, spare a thought for your parents/families just in case, your next of kin won't thank you for having to pay 7k in return freight costs, for your bits in a box!

A “EHIC” Card, which is a free card issued by the NHS, ask your GP, it provides you with free/reduced medical bills in the event of something unforeseen; Dentists, Doctors, Hospital, or you can apply online here: https://www.ehic.org.uk/Internet/startApplication.do (https://www.ehic.org.uk/Internet/startApplication.do)

Considerations for Continental/European Travel:
· Warning triangle, First aid kit and Hi-Viz vest (Now compulsory for France)
· Rear Number Plate bearing the “Euro GB” motif, if not you will need a GB sticker either for the reg plate or the oval type for the back of your car.
· Headlight Adapters required for continental driving RHD to LHD beam alignment. (Not sure if this is a legal requirement but the AA advise you to do so).
· High Vis Vest
· Breathalyser 2 pack (Legal French requirement again)
· First Aid Kit
· Emergency Fire Extinguisher: 600g Dry Powder

Thanks to 'glendog74' and 's.mac' for the majority of the above text.

Just a few thoughts on the matters at hand, more to follow as and when.

Normal holiday insurance does not always cover you doing trackdays and extreme stuff (with Shimmy!) but CCI towergate will do you policy including trackday you state track/dates. It could be bit late to find out you're not actually covered just when you need to be!

Right all,

I'm close to booking a night crossing to Rotterdam for the way out and a Eurotunnel train back (appreciate return is better value, but I can't afford a slow crossing back).

For those that have been on the Hull - Rotterdam service before, is it worth getting a cabin upgrade or paying for meals upfront ?

Thanks

s.mac
28-02-2013, 06:02 PM
I wouldnt bother with an upgrade, but I would pay for meals up front, its just easier to hand a token in.

Fri eve.

280 i think it was ? (or therabouts) for 2 people inc 2 meals and cabin upgrade. Although we're getting the tunnel back.

Seems ok for trip over, a room for the night, 2 meals, reduced mileage, and actually I'm quite glad to avoid the trudge down to Folkestone, it's tedious (esp on a bank holiday w/e). This will be new and therefore more interesting.
