Expecting to sleep like a kid at Christmas

Hi,

Exciting day for me today as I'm collecting my CSL which I've bought from toplad.

I first saw the car over a month ago, but it's taken rather longer than expected to complete the sale. Long story short, I went to view the car and arranged an inspection (with http://www.vehicle-inspections.co.uk). Although that showed the car was generally sound, there was a small subframe crack. We agreed a sale on the basis that toplad sorted this issue.

A West Yorkshire dealership sent off for authorisation but advised that they'd only cover half the cost. I'm a CSL newbie but I've read enough to know that's nonsense and toplad wasn't having it either. Thanks to the forum we know that Elms in Cambridge has a great reputation and has fixed this issue many times, so toplad took the car to them for repair.

Needless to say, Elms said they'd do the work FOC, and I got the good news on Thursday that the car is fixed and ready for collection.

Looking forward to reporting on the return journey... time to try to get some sleep.

Well done !! looks a nice car i was going to view it myself when i was looking but a trip to leeds was a bit of a treck, but one came up for sale down south so the deal was done.

What reason did BMW give for only paying for half? What is the mileage and registration year?

if Adam left the APs on you will need to fully flush the brake fluid and put new in, when BMW (inc Elms) do the sub frame floor replacement they top the brake fluid back up with standard OEM stuff, I then found I had a mix of racing blue and shit, not good so I fully flushed the system when I got mine back. At least they stamped my book with a brake fluid change :whistle: that was with the boot floor replacement :)

The mileage is just over 66k and it was registered in 2003. It was toplad who dealt with the dealer so I don't know if they gave a reason for only paying for half. It's strange that there are local variations in how this issue is addressed. I asked Elms about this and they advised that as they're experienced with the problem, they understand how to best present the case to BMW.

Having to travel darrrnnn sarfffff to collect the car was a bit of a pain but given all the good reports about Elms, I was happy to make the trip knowing that the problem would be fixed properly.

I'm now a paid up member and I've signed up for the Munich trip :)

My "take" on the 50% is....

I would say BMW pay a fixed rate for replacement and some dealers don't want to do the job for a cheaper rate and "try it on" with owners hoping that they'll just be glad of the discount..

I spoke with Elms today. They confirmed that the brake fluid system was fully drained. Useful for people to be aware so they can ask less diligent dealers to do this when they have the subframe repair done.

The car does still have the APs on. Should I consider upgrading to a higher quality fluid than OEM? I don't have any immediate plans to track the car and if I do, I'll be taking it easy as I'm no driving hero.

Interesting theory and very cheeky if true. I find it hard to believe that a Dealer would be that sneaky, but accept that maybe I'm being naive. Hopefully someone with some inside knowledge can confirm what the possible outcomes are when they request authorisation.

Nothing to do with the dealer or anything sneaky, just regional differences I suppose.
I phoned BMW UK and had it out with them, they wouldn't budge on paying the full bill.
Shame about the brake fluid, I had the good stuff installed about 4k ago. If you're not intending to track the car, its pointless having the OEM changed
First job is to get the winter rubber installed and take it out for a good trashing, I didn't get chance to drive the car as M division intended much over the last 3 months, that will sharpen the gear change up and clear the engine out.

Good to see you on Sunday. The level of grip from the Cups was comical - the car is much more sorted on the Vredesteins. I'm still taking it easy in the corners, but the way the car goads you on to the redline is intoxicating so it's difficult to avoid doing that! I'll leave the OEM brake fluid for the mo and change it if I get into track days.
