View Full Version : Poly bushing question....

I was intending on replacing the front rollbar bushes and the rear arm mounting bushes. The rear subframe front and rear bushes, diff mounts, rollbar and rear trailing arm bushes...
Now the only reason I was going to do this is the fact the rear end will be off the car and after 67,000 miles I "thought" the bushes would be worn and the front end as there isn't much too it.
I will be using the car as a weekend toy, 2 to 4 track days a year plus a yearly Ring trip..
As a CSL newbie I'd like some advice from the long standing owners..
Thanks
Steve

Mine is 96k miles with some hard wear.
I have had two wishbone pairs (which can't be polybushed, lower rear arms around 70k miles, and RTAB about 20k miles (changed to Turner limiter kit and OeM bushes)

As Shimmy says, the Turner limiter kit with oem bushes works well for the RTABs and I know there are quite a few on here who have had this done.

as far as i can make out only weak spot on front end is wishbones (bushes encapsulated) so no choice but OEM or similar.
rest dont seem to fail as quickly

Sounds like polying is a waste of time then..... This car is seriously hard to modify lol...
I'll just do that rear thingy and leave it be then

there are lots of things to muck around with but i think most here will confirm you end up thinking that for road car all you need to do is
RTAB limiter kit
SS Race Lightweight back box
100 cell cats
and then if you track it
AP brakes, RS29 pads
Coilover suspension (like Intrax, Nitron, KW or AST) with stiffer springs
18 inch square set up and CUps
the n if you get serious
bit of weight saving if you have to
maybe oil cooler or gearbox cooler if going bonkers
race seat harness and maybe cage
I seriously would not bother with map, any mods under bonnet, centre section exhaust, badges, depos, black bits, fluffy dice.
Bits to watch out for but by no means likely are failing RTAB, alternator, head gasket (cylinder to cylinder), front wishbones bushes, vanos, rear cracks, sticky aribox flap

Excellent list there and gives me a few ideas.... I defiantly won't go the coilover route I had KWV3s in the past and for me found them a waste of time as I'm not interested in all the adjustability track side etc.
I was already thinking about a rear box and sports cats (does anyone bother with decats..??)
Whilst the rears in bits I will get the RTAB and the limiter kit done and might do the rear box (Milltek any good for the CSL as my mates a dealer)..

SteveNothing wrong with the Milltek if you can get it for a good price, some on here just find them a little boomy,I think Bealo had one on his and liked it.

they used to be popular when Thorney was popular.
latest version was ok, previous was very droney, decent quality.

In that case I will get the Milltek... I might ask about a group buy on them if I get some interest. Now does anyone decat or just stick with sports cats..??

I had the later version of the Milltek on my previous E46 M3, and I did find it quite droney & took it off after a few weeks. It also didn't quite fit properly, hanging marginally lower on one side than the other. Maybe I just had a dodgy one, but that was my experience...
My impression from this forum is that people have generally had more success with Supersprint.

As previously said most people run the OEM RTAB bushes with the Turner Limiting Kit, I have this too on my car.
With regards to the ARB bushes I am not sure they add much value, I fitted some to my car about 3 months ago and I am thinking of going back to my OEM bushes.
Personally I'm not a fan of Milltek, I found both variants I tried very boomy, doesn't help that I run a Supersprint non resonated centre section which just increases the boom.
Imho Supersprint rear boxes are the best for the M3.
Btw Steve, do you know my mate Bryan? he has a White RS which is always at SCC (Orange wheels)...

Yeah he is, he's one of my best mates, his Focus is not half quick too, he dealt me a bit of a spanking in the drag race we had the other week :clown:
He did mention the other day when I went for brekkie with him that he knew some chap called Steve had sold his RS and gone to a CSL recently, I thought ah it must be you!

For the front end fit these...get the track version they are the best and not harsh at all for the road...

As for fitting exhaust and 100cell cats be careful running at WOT and High RPM for long periods...Reason for this is that due to the exhaust flowing better ecu needs to increase fuelling, however the fuel trims in the map do not seem to have enough compensation available and you can find the AFR getting a bit on the lean side....yes gives you more power but engine temps and combustion temps also increase.....etc etc....
if you decat you will lose low rpm torque...car will feel flat...

leading to possible HG failure ???

Well yes....it will accelerate the failure but due to the design of the block and the HG it will always fail even on a completely standard car.....
If you keep the car long enough you will undoubtedly have to change it again after doing it the first time!
