Hey,
I'm new to the forum but a long time BMW/M3/CSL fan.
At the risk of boring some of you i wanted to share my lasting memory of a CSL that only cemented by long time love of the M3.
I live in Scotland and was driving down to Engerland on the A74 many moons ago. I had been driving a while and decided to take it easy so was sitting on cruise control in the middle lane and pretty much coasting it as the roads were fairly light on traffic.
I always keep a note of what's around me when driving by being a constant mirror watcher, quite anal about it to be honest, but out of nowhere a Carrera S went screaming past my right shoulder and took me completely by surprise and before i had a even a chance to ask myself "What the heck is his rush?" a CSL sonic boomed past me and scared the utter crap out of me and explained the reason for the 911's haste.
I like porkers but have always felt that i only ever see them being driven by people "tootling around" in them even on the motorways and did enjoy seeing one in a rush, more so that a CSL was the reason for its urgency!
I pulled out into the fast lane and tried to keep pace, (i must stress here, that i kept within the speed limit and the roads were empty) as i wanted to see if the CSL could reel in its quarry, i didnt have to push too hard as the motorway was straight for about a half mile and then swooped off to the right at a camber and gave me enough time to see the CSL totally monster the 911 and overtake him and carry on pulling away before i lost sight of both of the cars.
This is sad but i have to admit to getting goose pimples as i watched and as the noise of the CSL started to fade i sat and grinned like a loon! My dad was in the passenger seat and i had to laugh when he turned to me and said "You wouldn't think a BMW could beat a Porsche!".
For me the noise of the CSL at full pelt and the image of a 911 in "fight or flight" mode being humbled was something that has stayed with me to this day.
Would love to read others "fave CSL moment" if you care to share?
Thanks for reading!

I got goose pimples reading that (the noise bit)
It is one of the great feeling, buying something that you have lusted after for a while, so much more satisfying than having loads of money and buying what you want relentlessly over and over again.
I think you may love it, it does not disappoint, just make sure you get the one you really want. :119:

Briefly,
That's why i'll be back in a CSL one day the sheer feeling excitement & enjoyment of owning & driving a fantastic car, which i sadly failed at the firtst time due to working constantly over seas.
Bought CL04CSl, owned for 2 years & sold (with regret) bought a vantage & yeah it's ok sounds the part but doesn't deliver.
Oh & the next CSL will be used, not going to be a fanjita about keeping the miles low, sod that.
Cheers
Mark
PS Thats got to be the guy in scotland fair cop !
I was offerd a 04 12k miler prior to buying mine but next time it won't be a museum car.

Welcome 'Soundwave'
Owning a CSL is an experience, driving one is sheer pleasure, it may share 90% of its genes with the M3, but it's the other 10% that put the smile on your face.

nice story, and I certainly can relate to it.
Back when i was about 10 years old I got stranded at football practice when my friends mum forgot to pick us up:whistle:. My neighbor owned a pub across the road so i walked in to the pub covered in muck and asked him for a lift home. With a look of disgust he agreed. as we walked out in to the car park i he clicked the fob on his key and the doors opened to a brand new e36 M3 evo. After that drive home I was in love and I didn't even know what it was:smt055
That day I said I'm going to buy an M3 when I'm older and 10 years later when I was 20, I did.
Then a couple of years in to my M3 ownership my mechnic got a CSL when they were relatively new and I had never seen one. He gave me the keys and once again I said I will own one of these some day! last January I made the trip to the UK and drove it back to Ireland:beer:

Great experience you had there!
I couldn't share mine on a public forum but it did involve the csl and a motorbike - the motorbike having whatever paperwork he had in the bag bungied to his rear seat flying out all over the motorway and him having to pull over. I think he enjoyed it though as he did a :smt023 (or may of been a :birdman:) :-D

Barry, how different does it feel to your M3? Is it a daily driver or "garidge" queen???

It's a daily driver:smokin: I don't do much milage but it's my only car.
It's quite different to my e36 but at the same time you'd know they both came from the same blood line, so to speak, the s54 is just another iteration of the s50. a damn good one too!

If it is a Porsche it has to be a GT3 or the RS anyway.

Good tale fella.
My favourite moment in a csl may have been on saturday.
Spent the week at the ring and spa at the start of october in the new car after having owned a cs for a few years. Spent a fair proportion of the week getting more and more frustrated at things. Just didn't feel comfortable, particularly at spa.
Put spacers on csl and did a reverse direction track morning at knockhill.... Much happier! Don't know if it is a placebo thing. Just was more confident to push on.
Then I drove Conleths gt3 rs back home from knockhill.
That was nice also!
Then i went got some pints in the west end of Glasgow and saw Skyfall!
Top day out!!!
Thanks all
Spacers?
I always thought that when i snag myself a CSL i would getting geo done, never thought of spacers being necessary on a CSL (you got any pics of yours before/after spacers?)
PS: Watched Skyfall on Saturday, pretty sweet but not my fave Daniel Craig 007 movie!
Sorry no pics....
Car just felt a wee bit more planted.
Again may just have been in the mind.
Yes skyfall good, maybe not as good as casino royale.
Not sure yet..... Had been drinking furstenburg in the cinema so all was wonderful

There are no actual gains when you press Sport though, just a sharper throttle and more noise.
Shimmy, this is you, isn't it ?

Ya reckon?why do you get more noise?
still no worries
31-10-2012, 05:10 PM
this sounds odd but i had two laps of the nurburgring with about an inch of snow on it before they closed it, nearly 300 corners sideway's trying to stay with my mate in an impreza, very very slow lap time but so much fun !
to be fair any rear wheel drive car would have done, in fact a really cheap one would have ment a lot faster lap time !

As far as I am aware on CSL there are gains by having the sport on The airbox being closed for longer means for that period of revs the engine is lacking air and some power (prob just 0-5/10 bhp.
I belief this because I haves even my car dynoed at Simpons 30bhp down on power, then finding the flap BROKEN, removing it and the 30bhp retuning.
As far as I know this means that the flap being shut permently restricts air flow for a much bigger range of revs thus meaning CSl will be down. 0-30bhp, instead of 0-5/10 if it was just Sport Off.
adem.csl
31-10-2012, 09:58 PM
i believe you to be right.hear me out i could be wrong but this is what i think.why produce a button that only makes the car responsive to pedal travel and make noise?the noise is the flap opening up correct?ok when that flap opens it allows greater airflow into the manifold?yes? now the car wont run properly with too much air so we add fuel?ok we got increased air so we increse fuel.ratio is 14.1 i think.now we got more fuel and air we run greater exhaust temps.that could burn a valve so to counter that we addd timing am i right?now with more air fuel and timing comes more power?what do ya think?
adem.csl
31-10-2012, 10:02 PM
by the way all other sensors are adding their evaluations such as engine temp vs throttle position vs air temp/pressure vs all the oxygen sensors that monitor fuel.all adding to the adjustments so it cant be just a noise and quick pedal.
thrashermax
31-10-2012, 10:08 PM
More power at the same pedal position but the top BHP remains the same. This is why when cruising the car increases revs when the button is pressed despite keeping the pedal in the same position.
Unfortunately, Adem, you come across as a wide boy - don't be offended by comments to you, just enjoy your CSL! And stop racing Fords!

what im saying is same as shimmy ok.ya top bhp of 360 will stay the same cos the flap is open top end.but wid flap closed you loose a litte power due to restrictions.it was my take anyway not gospel.YET!!!!!! whats a wide boy?

That's great Adem, I'm from Burnley... bit rough, moved the Walthamstow, not so nice but now live in Horsham -much better and safer for my kids... I'm sorry some people were a little negative... did you do the mods on your CSL yourself? Nice strut brace...
My Dad was a nurse and supplemented his income from buying/selling cars... even though I've just got a CSL I have old Fords in my blood... my other car is mark 1 1972 Escort with 1800cc zetec...
Enjoy your CSL and don't bother racing the Fords!

It's easy for people to be negative on the keyboard... but there are decent people around. Fiesta sounds a handful! 220bhp and FWD in a light car... you must love getting back in CSL after that!

Shim - 30bhp with a broken flap but with sport off and a working flap the flap still opens at 6.2k or whatever it is so for the last 2k odd rpm there is bugger all difference in air flow in to the airbox.
The peak figure on the dyno should be identical I'd say, as should the power and torque curves from the point the flap opens in non sport mode, in both modes 100% throttle pedal = 100% throttle movement...
Would like to see logs of MAP values with and without the flap open through the rev range whilst the car is moving at speed through the air.

I agree with sport off, the difference is only for a short rev range and minimal BUT I BELIEVE THERE IS A DIFFERENCE nonetheless.
