View Full Version : My brand new CSL

So here are finally Pictures of my factory new, 9 year old CSL with just 33KM on the clock.
In the first Picture, look in the back ... an M1 with less than 50KM on the clock !!!
Next to my CSL is a Z1 with 20KM on the clock
It has been in a concrete basement with no windows, so just a Little dust.
All the paint is fantastic, look at the exhausts, brand new metal with no smog or discolouring.
Inside all the protective coverings are still there
The only thing I have found is the small CSL logo on the side, it seems the clear plastic protecting the CSL logo has turned yellow, can somebody confirm this or maybe it is suppposed to look like this.

Where exactly is this? Do you have access to the M1 to check the chassis number?

That is my very big dilemma.
Yes it would keep it's value if I kept it this way.
... but having a CSL and not be able to hear the roar of the engine would be close to impossible.
So right now I'm thinking just below 2.000KM a year, so in 5 years from now it would be just below 10.000KM
I am fortunate enough to have a 997.2 C2S with all the Porsche Motorsports parts (Ceramic brakes, PDK, Sports Chrono, SPASM, LSD, bucket seats, HANS 6pt harness, roll Cage) for track days (just returned from the ring and did a 7.52:30 lap) and for daily drives I have BMW X1 2.0 Sdrive diesel, a 2006 V8 650 with all equipment and a Z4 2.5 with twin screw supercharger, drexler LSD, KW V3, Movit Big brake kit, Eisenmann exhaust, complete rebuild of all interior and exterior parts to Z4M, does 0-100 in 4.9s ....
... so I guess there is a chance I can keep the CSL low mileage
... but not driving it, not a chance in hell :-)

It is in Denmark, a official BMW dealer who's family has been race drivers for 3 generations and ran another M1 a Le Mans 24H back in the day.
You can see some of their awards hanging on the back wall.
Dad sr. simply collected an extra car of important BMW over the years, but jr. is selling out to reclaim space as the garage is pretty full.

Actually I stumbled across a recent post in an American M3 forum where they talked about it would be just 5 years until they could finally import CSL's to the USA.
So maybe prices by then will explode :supz:

AFAIK I think they can import a CSL into Canada in 5 years but not the USA.
Canada has a 15 years exclusion meaning that a car over 15 years is excluded from emmisions , compliance etc in the USA the exclusion is 25 years , although this can vary from state to state, California being the worst.
You can get a car federalised, a company used to do it for the original gtr's ( r32-34) but it invovles crash testing each model to get apporval and fitting stupid side running lights in the wings/bumpers along with the usual emmisions testing.
Makhno your CSL looks stunning btw!!!

Just as I was starting to like all you like minded CSL nutters, I am starting to hate you - a lot!
You can't mean I shouldn't drive it at all.
The comment from Shimmy that it will be worth hundres of thousands ...
But what kind of mileage do you think is the right amount to keep its value?
33KM as it is - just factory tests
<1.000 in 5 years
<10.000 in 5 years
Since i trash the 997.2 at tracks I was thinking storing the CSL from 1st september - 1 june in a closed garage and then only drive the CSL june, july and august and only in the dry and with an avg. of less than 2.000KM a year.
So in 5 years time it will have done less than 10.000 and will never have been wet.
BUT, it will have taken a few laps at the ring :-)
Maybe put 3M protective film on the front to protect paint

I couldn't help myself I'd HAVE to drive it..... You obviously have money so to use it and possibly loose a few Euros on the car won't put that much of a dent in your wallet. The car would still be woprth good money even with 10,000 miles on the clock.

A little Update on mileage.
A battery came in the car today for the first time in years, and the mileage is 200KM, not 33KM as he expected, so maybe he did a few test drives when it was new.
But I don't think this changes the value

No, but 4k kms does, 6k does, 10k does - more cars around with 10k kms than 200kms.

Even if they could they’d want left hookers, so rules us out of the equation.
As nice as it would be to have a zero mileage car I would surcome to temptation & evently drive it.
The driving you are referring to would probably do the car good & for all the difference it will make to its value you might as well enjoy it!

Great thread with great pics, well done. If you want to make some money then buy another CSL and keep this one with 200kms. It will be the lowest mileage CSL about in the future. Either way its amazing and youll love it.

Keep it undercover, IMO it will be worth coin in 15 yrs.
Buy a cheaper one and thrash it, it wont lose money. But if you drive the "new" one it will drop in price, very quickly.
No brainer for me.

Needs to be 25 years old.
CSL's have a way to go yet, E30 M3 Sport evo's don't even get in yet.
http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/import/FAQ%20Site/pages/page2.html#Anchor-13029
"If the vehicle is less than 25 years old and was not originally manufactured to comply with all applicable FMVSS, and/or was not so certified by its original manufacturer, it cannot be lawfully imported into the U.S. on a permanent basis unless NHTSA determines it eligible for importation."
lovely car and a rare find. Congradz.
I'd forget about making alot of $$$ from the CSL (I think if you keep it as is you will make some $$$ but I doubt it will be a large sum) There are just a good number running around. It may keep its value or equal out any inflation (maybe) with below average mileage.
These on the other hand will provide some nice returns.

Congratulations on your recent purchase it's a rare find and a pristine example of a CSL.
However I subscribe to the philosophy that cars are meant to be driven, that's what they are built for.
I can't see the point of never driving a car, having it and not using it is a sacrilege and a travesty of the CSL basic design.
I've read the comments by others suggesting the investment potential of a low mileage example, I have to agree that there is potential, like the Batmobile and the 2002 Turbo but that's in 25/30 years time, they still cost money standing still.
Drive it and enjoy it for what it is - a car, albeit a very nice one!

Denmark you say, so what is the price of the only CSL in the country, including the massive 180% tax you guys have to pay on car purchases?:bigcry:
I rmeember considering importing mine to Denmark a few years ago and the tax is based on market value (this car been 'the market') and it would have cost me @£100K!?:banghead:
