The AUC prices are really tempting on these at the moment, anyone run one as a daily?

My other options a 335i saloon/touring.

They are an awesome car but the petrol consumption is absolutely insane.

I thought my e39 M5 was bad but the e60 is a lot worse apparently:119:

If you can stomach that, go for it as long as it has warranty!

Funnily enough a mate of mine had one for quite a while, he said it was a great car, especially with the Evolve exhaust (sounded stunning, very Lambo esque).

As a daily it would kill the wallet, he often struggled to see more than 13/14 mpg as an average, it's a very thirsty beast, round town it seemed to end up in single figures, he never saw more than 20mpg even on a long run.

Funnily enough he ditched it, then got himself a mint E39 M5 which he now has supercharged it!

I personally think there are better daily options than a E60 M5.

My current daily has done 27ish mpg and I will tend to do about 7000 miles in the car PA. With the current fuel prices I'm looking at about an extra 1k per year in fuel.

What else do you feel I should be considering instead?

1k per year extra isn't too bad a I suppose.

Do you have a CSL as a weekend car?

buy a 3, 5 or 7 series diesel:whistle:

If it were me, I'd have something special for the weekends / summer evenings / track days if you're inclined that way and a crappy hack to get to and from work.

Depends on your budget really, and if you want a 'nice' car to get to work in or if you already have a nice weekend toy?

I have the CSL for when the weather is good, or when I feel like I need a blast in her.

I was running a knackered old E Class Merc for a few years as my daily, which i've just changed to a 1.2 Corsa with Air Con, which is perfect for the daily grind, plus it keeps the CSL all nice for when I do want to break it out :)

I have an E46 M3 SMG as a fun car which is undergoing some surgery to make it track ready at the moment.

The daily has been a facelift 130i for the past year but it's just too small. I'm not going to join the diesel :wanker: clan at any cost. Either I go for a 335i preferably manual or an E60 M5. If I could find an E61 AUC in my budget, I think it'd be mine now but I can't.

It's really only the fuel that's lingering at the moment, 335i will probably do 25ish in the same journey compared to the E60 at 17ish. I will get a newer car in the E9x though...hmm decision.

The 335s are great. I get around 24-27mpg on the highway and my car is tuned.

Hi,

I thought the E39 M5 a poor car,
but the E60 M5 is different league.

If you want your daily driving to be
a constant adventure into the unknown
then the E60 M5 will certainly not dissapoint.

The Yanks did a bit better in that Limp
Mode for those who got a Manual Box
version, it is more fun.

Funnily enough I was talking to my mate last night who has the S/C E39, and those were his exact words too, he reckons it's a nicer drive, has more soul and all round a better car than the E60

I have one, feel free to ask any questions. Its not a daily but I do all the "daily duties" with it. Another car to consider would be a CLS55 - thats some motor too.

Really? The yanks are a bit dramatic.

Hi,

Drive a E60 M5 with Manual 6 speed box,
and although it does not remove all
the other issues, its a much friendly car
as a daily.

Maybe a fraction slower through the gears
but it makes no difference in the
real world, and at near on 2 ton its never going
to be nimble.

Great car for across borders, providing it gets
there, but on SMG Car but best to use
Park and Ride when you do arrive.

I had my E60 M5 for approx 2 years and whilst it was not my daily I currently find myself looking at them with the view to buying another next year. Of all the cars i have owned none ticked as many boxes as the M5 and at the prices you can pick one up for now they are a massive bargain.
Yes they like a drink and are especially poor around town but please people remember you are feeding 10 cylinders, not 4 or 6...

I always thought I would go down the GT3 route like so many have before me but when you sit back and work it all out I could keep the CSL add another M5 leaving me with the best of both worlds plus keeping the miles of the CSL and loosing very very little in depreciation, almost a no brainer.

For anyone who has yet to drive one and gets the chance to it takes a while to gel with the car. The advantage we would all have is experience of using the SMG box.

@the gorilla there is unfortunately not much chance of us ever getting a drive in a manual car as to the best of my knowledge they were only made for the US market. However I liked the SMG personally.

Oh and just a quick edit to say one word : warranty

Hi,

2 years ownership, blimey I did not last 2 months.

Getting onto first name terms with Recovery
Truck drivers, sort of nullify's the
expectation.

The Engine and Electronics / Diff ect were altered
for the Manual Cars.

I drove one in Munich [Mule] and another in
the States.

While the Clutch is not for wimps, the
Car as a daily package I believe is
much more suited for daily trips.

The fact you should never own one without
''warranty'' and a BMW one at that,
sort of sums it up.

Oh yes warranty really is the key word. Mine had 12k worth during my ownership and as a friend of mine works for BMW we have since checked and it has had another 12k's worth since I moved it on.
One has to remember the hype though when they were released. September 2004 if I remember correctly and at that time nothing so advanced was on the market. V10 engine, paddle shift, HUD, moving seat bolsters, miles of cabling and I remember some article were it was said to have more processing power than the space shuttle :119:

I replaced the M5 with a V8 M3 which i ran for approx 18 months and never not once did it give any problems, not even a bulb.
However, the M3 did not get under my skin the way the M5 did. On the right road in the right conditions it simply was an engineering masterpiece.

From 1:05 on no video on the internet has ever made the hairs stand on the back of my neck like this does........

Seems like an excellent choice for England that you can have BMW warranty.

Everywhere else... the idiot has to pay for everything :banghead:

I ran one for about two years as a daily, fabulous car but Jesus H it was almost a daily trip to the petrol station.
One of the best cars I've ever had.

I had a new 535D before the M5, great everyday car ! Very hard to find a nice one now though and they give their fair share of problems.
Interestingly the M5 is actually more comfortable on the softest EDC setting, the 535 can be a little crashy.

Not VATable Shim. Not sure I'm selling now. I should do but having not used it for a while I did a small trip in it this week and decided to hold on to it for a bit longer.

So I've driven 2 E60 M5's and today a mate convinced me to take a 335d for a test drive at a dealer. I'm a little disturbed at how compelling the 335d is as a daily! I really wanted to hate it but it's actually pretty good as a no drama mode of transport at a fair pace.

Yes it has a diesel chatter and the slush box is boring but to carry bikes/dog/skis etc it seems ideal plus the Mrs might allow me to buy "her" (read "me") an elise as I'm putting up with a diesel on a daily basis.

The M5 is very impressive but it only really came alive well into illegal speeds and the running costs are utterly frightening. I also much like the look of the E91 compared to the E60.

As a daily 335d or indeed 535d is hard to beat.

I used to regularly take my old E92 335d over the Cat & Fiddle and around the EVO Triangle in the past. OK, it's not the last word in handling, but the shove you get coming out of corners is a good laugh and you could make fairly rapid progress in it

Plus, as Chris says, it does the daily commute brilliantly. An awful lot of crap in it that was unnecessary though, like automated arms to deliver the seatbelt to you

:hahaha: had those in the M3 and the seatbelt used to fall off the arm so many times :banghead:
