What temps are you guys reaching on track? I was getting 125 degrees today, which seems alot. My Mazda 3 MPS used to go to 110 and that was it. Should I be considering an oil cooler?

Mine was around that yesterday. It was about 22-23• so no need to worry.

Hi,

125 Degrees Oil temp on a S54 is
very high.

Many run it on Track in both CSL and M3
but in my opinion is to high.

Why ?

Std S54 takes the oil temp from the Oil
Filtre block as the oil is flowing back
into engine block / head, from the oil filtre / cooler etc.

So the temp reading is taken from the oil
when in flow at one of its coolest locations.

To have 125 deg Oil temp at that location
will mean that the oil temp around number 6
cylinder will be 140/150 deg, plus.

At 150 deg even 10-60 syth oil will be suffering
from Oil degredation due to ''oil shear''.

Syth Oil will also start to foam at these sorts
of temps which can cause hot spots etc.

Some may disagree, but persoanlly I would
not be runninmg a std S54 at 125 deg oil temp,
if I was planning on keeping the engine any
length of time.

Race car, different story.

So what's the solution to get the oil temp down on track? Bigger oil cooler, 55deg stat?

Has yours always been like that Billy? With presumably no problems?

Gorilla what do you thinks a safe oil temp then?

more cooling is the only real way to reduce general temps surely, unless you have a fault and it can be rectified

Mines usually lower but it was hot yesterday.

Im sure most have had that figure on here on a warm day.

Hi,

I would not want to see much above
110/115 deg Oil temp on a std S54 which would
equate to around 130/135 ish, on number
6 cylinder.

Cooling wise, 55 Deg water Stat is a given
for any Track work as you want the Stat
to open and the stay open.

Water pump should be checked as they have
a Plastic Impeller which sits on a steel
shaft, which can and does rust.

Oil temp, then a Larger or second in-line Oil Cooler
is moving in the right direction, or the fitting of
a water to oil heat exchanger.

True it was warm, I will see what it's like on a cooler day then decide whether to do anything about it
