View Full Version : The CSL production data thread

I’ve just finished cataloguing one by one all the RHD CSL production data (yes I know, hello ladies). It is a fairly arduous process but I don’t know of anyone else that has done it. I will start on the LHD production data next, but as there are more cars it will take me a few months. So in the interim here is a summary of the key findings.

There were 542 RHD CSLs made according to the BMW ASAP data, there is no listing for cars JC98136 > JC98139, these cars don’t exist as they appear to be the change point from MY03 cars to MY04 cars, there is a production gap in the data for this period too for the LHD vehicles. Of the 542 cars there are 16 test vehicles which have their “Data restricted” with 6 made during the production run in July, the rest in 2002. These test cars are listed for the following markets:

Australia – 1
Japan – 1 (no RHD cars went to Japan though)
UK – 11
South Africa – 1 (Found its way to NZ and was sold through the BMW network)
Oceania – 2 (New Zealand maybe and ?)

The first test car is shown as built on 19/9/2002 with the first production car coming off the line on 10/6/2003. The last RHD car made was a silver car on 17/12/2003 and was shipped out of Europe with a KM/H speedo and 315 MhZ alarm but it didn’t go to Australia. The second last RHD car made was 7 days prior and was a UK/Ireland delivered car.

Of the 542 RHD cars made:
139 (26%) were black, of these 26 were delimited and 49 were delivered on double spokes.
403 (74%) were silver, of these 65 were delimited and 137 were delivered on double spokes.
Thus 16% were delimited and 34% supplied on double spokes.

There were 3 stripped out road racers i.e no options selected at all, all 3 were silver UK cars. These cars were all supplied on double spoke wheels and didn’t have any of the “selectable options” of:
* Deleted model lettering.
* Green tinted upper strip windscreen.
* Climate comfort windscreen.
* Floor mats.
* Smoker package.
* Headlight washers.
* PDC.
* Rain sensor.
* Xenon.
* Air conditioning.
* CD Player.
* Mini disc player.
* Radio.

There were 3 cars fitted with 2 stage brake lights in the last couple of weeks of production, 1 black and 2 silver. The black car went to Australia and the two silver cars had KPH speedos and all had 315 MhZ alarms and went to an unknown market.
The last RHD black car made was a delimited car that went to Australia.

The production spilt by month is as shown below. However it must be noted that some cars didn't come off the line in VIN sequence, it appears as though these had "rework faults" to rectify or were waiting parts.

UK cars
430 UK/Ireland cars were made including the 11 “data restricted cars” some of which were made in 2002. Of these:
111 of these were black, 19 of these were delimited and 49 were on double spokes.
319 of these were silver, 38 were delimited and 131 were on double spokes.
1 UK delivered car had a KPH speedo, as did one “Data restricted car”.

49 cars were delivered without a radio.
25 cars were delivered without air conditioning.
10 had mini disc players.
13 were CSL debadged.
208 had a green strip windscreen.
87 had a climate comfort windscreen.
269 had floor mats.
76 had the smokers pack.
281 had the headlight washers. The production cars didn’t get them until car JC98097 on 28/7/2003.
247 had PDC.
203 had the rain sensor.
329 had Xenons.
405 had air conditioning.
328 had a CD player.
381 had a radio.

3 UK production cars didn’t have a battery master switch, seat belt buzzer or additional fuel in tank when built.

2 production cars had the “Omission of outer skin preservation”, a silver car and a black car.

1 production car didn’t get the “Coil on plug” option. This appears to have been relevant to UK cars as all other RHD markets didn’t have it, I guess it is related to fuel quality and emissions.

That leaves 13 unknown market RHD vehicles 2 were preproduction. Of these 13, 3 where "Oceania cars". The Oceania cars were:

All Silver cars, none delimited.
All had the MY04 coil on plug options which I guess all went to the same market.
All had a green tint windscreen.
2 had an alarm system.
None had floor mats.
None had the smokers package.
2 had headlight cleaning system.
All had PDC.
2 had rain sensor.
All had xenons.
All had air conditioning.
All had a CD player.
All had a radio.
All were shipped with a battery master switch.
All had English literature packs.

That leaves 8 unknown region vehicles. These comprised of:
All 8 were silver, none were delimited.
All had an alarm.
All had floor mats.
All had smokers package.
All had xenon.
All were shipped with a battery master switch.
All had English literature packs.
7 had headlight cleaning system.
7 had PDC.
7 had rain sensor.
7 had air conditioning.
7 had a CD player.
7 had a radio.
7 had a 2 stage brake light.

Ther was also one pre-production RHD car, JC98008 that was built as a Japanese car. This is interesting as all of the Japanese production cars were LHD, so I don't know why they would build this car.

And that is pretty much it for the RHD production run of the CSL. I hope that has answered some questions.

If anyone has any specific combination queries please ask.

Very interesting, are you planning to add any more info on rhd cars?

Can you shed some more light on the battery switch (where is it located) & fuel tank?

I am not sure what the battery switch is, it is listed as an option but it must be region specific not customer choosable. The fuel reference is just to the factory putting extra fuel in the tank if the car was travelling a long way to the selling dealer as they didn't want it to run out enroute.

I wasn't planning on posting any more info as the combinations are wide and varied, but can probably answer specific questions but filtering the data.

Thanks for the interesting info!!!

I find it weird that South Africa only had 60 in total? What happened to the other 5? My cars tag shows No.10 of 65...?

Also...I was told by a friend that the Main Battery switch was something that was removed by the dealer from the car when it reached its relative country...it was apparently a switch to disconnect the battery while the car was being transported. I'm not 100% sure if this is the correct information though...

I'm happy to know that my car is one of the few that had almost all of the optional extras! :)

I don't know about the other 5, could they have been LHD which I haven't done yet? Maybe SA had those badges made before hand and ended up only getting an allocation of 60?

born2boost

I doubt that...as I haven't seen or heard of any LHD models here, and I know that the law does not allow the importing of LHD cars into the country either...

Is there any chance that your info could be mistaken with the figure of 60??

I doubt that BMW would say 65 but then only produce 60...? I can understand the test car but 5 short seems unlikely?:)

Don't forget that BMW Germany dictate how many cars the subsidiaries get, so if they started affixing plaques to cars based on their "initial" allocation then by the time the 6 months was up that could have changed. I have no reason to doubt my data, but it could be wrong, but everything I have found and cross checked to date is spot on. 5 does seem like a nice round number to round down by though.

Thats a difficult one because the entire UK RHD list would need to be split into SG and SB then listed how many came with what.

From what I can see if you have no options then you are certainly one of 25 (the amount of cars with no AC) but some of the 25 could be SB.

Its a great read

From the BMW ASAP data there aren't any specific references to Hong Kong, so I really need a VIN to see how their cars were spec'd to take an educate guess on how many went there.

Think there were a couple designated for Singapore as well - you'd be shocked at how much they went for, like all cars there.

I drive a UK import (one of the 422) so I don't have an HK CSL VIN.

There are 6 official imports in HK by BMW HK. Our local club has 3-4 of them. They are all fully optioned and they were sold in HK for $1.18M dollars new. Thats 100K sterling. They are all SG. Last time I took my CSL to BMW (HK) the sale people were taking photo's etc. Seems like its a very rare sight for them too.

I still take mine back to the dealer although mine isn't an official import. Which garage are you taking yours to if not the dealer?

digi
12-09-2012, 07:30 PM
The only time I take it back to BMW is when I need the valve adjustment, other than that there is no reason to pay the premium as alot of good garages in HK have either ex BMW or Merc tech's that own them. They are very competent, but you will need to know who's who otherwise you will have some cowboy working on your machine which isn't good.

The garage I use do not speak English so there may well be a communication problem if you deal with them.

There is a friend who speaks English and he services Mercs, BMW's (he's a BMW nut), Porsche's etc. If you want I can pass you his details. His name is Ken and very well known in BMW circles in HK. He has a E36 M3 white in color / 997 Turbo etc. and everyone knows him as ACKenny. Trusty guy, deals with many wealthy clients and their vehicles.

I don't use him regularly simply becoz he's on the HK Island side and I'm located on the New Territory side, but if I had to have things done and I was on the island side I would go to him for my regular services for sure.

Excellent piece of work, labourious and time consuming and one not to be undertaken lightly.

These links may be of use, if not already using, in your quest for production information.

Providing you have the last 7 digits of the VIN No, you can access a copy of production data sheet for the individual vehicle as supplied by the factory, this would appear to access BMW's own data:
http://www.rubmw.ru/vincode/eng/

With specific regard to UK supplied cars, if you have access to the Original Registration No. (does not work if on private plates) then in most cases you can find the VIN No. via this link http://www.bmw-warranty.co.uk/Pages/CarDetails.aspx

NOTE: I understand the "shimmy" may be working on this information for UK Cars

May the Force be with You ! ! !

NBTBRV8

The LHD production run & market is much more complicated to break down than the RHD, but none the less this is what I have established:

There were 841 LHD CSLs made according to the BMW ASAP data, there is no listing for cars JB98408 > JB98409, these cars don’t exist as they appear to be the change point from MY03 cars to MY04 cars, there is a production gap in the data for this period too for the RHD vehicles at the end of August 2003. Of the 841 cars there are 44 vehicles which have their “Data restricted” with 15 made during the production run. These LHD test cars are listed for the following markets:

1 Egyptian market car.
35 German market vehicles.
3 Japanese market vehicles.
5 unknown market vehicles, however of these 5:
3 had Italian operating instructions,
1 had Swedish operating instructions (books),
1 had Dutch operating instructions (books),

The total LHD production run consisted of:
303 Black cars (36%) – 135 delimited – 97 were delivered on double spokes.
538 Silver cars (64%) – 223 delimited – 205 were delivered on double spokes.
Thus of the production run 43% were delimited and 36% were delivered on double spoke wheels.

German market L801A cars – 355 cars (42%)
Japanese market L807A cars – 152 cars (18%)
Gulf market L822A cars – 3 cars (3%)
Egyptian market L821A cars – 1 car (development vehicle)
The remaining cars didn’t have a market option code, so the following numbers are based upon the language in the “literature packs”

German literature, but not a German home market car – 159 cars (19%)
English literature – 19 cars (2%)
French literature – 62 cars (7%)
Italian literature – 71 cars (8%)
Spanish literature – 19 cars (2%)

The first LHD test car is shown as built on 17/9/2002 with the first production car coming off the line on 04/6/2003. There were 10 German market Press vehicles produced in the lead up to the main production run between 05/05/2003 > 08/05/2003 and 1 pre-production car coming off on the 03/06/2003, the day before the main production run started. The last LHD car made (JB98842) was a silver car on 19/12/2003 and was listed as a German market development vehicle which I presume was to be kept in some form of museum. Thus the last saleable production car was (JC98841) and was also made on 19/12/2003. It was a silver car that went to Japan.

There was 1 LHD stripped out road racer i.e. no options selected at all, a silver car with French language and literature pack car. This car didn’t have any of the “selectable options” of:
Radio
Mini disk player
CD player
Air Conditioning
Xenon lights
Rain sensor
PDC
Headlight Cleaning
Toll mirror (Japanese option only)
Smokers pack
Velour mats
Climate comfort windscreen
Green tint band windscreen
Alarm system
Deleted model lettering
Delimited

However, there was a silver car (Italian) that was also stripped of all options as listed above, except it was delimited whereas the French car wasn’t.

There were 8 cars fitted with 2 stage brake lights in the last couple of weeks of production, 1 black and 7 silver. All of these vehicles went to Japan.
The last LHD black car made (17/12/2003) was a delimited car that had German language and literature pack without a front number plate support. The car doesn’t have a country code so I can’t be sure where it went.

The production spilt by month is as shown below. However it must be noted that there were many LHD cars didn't come off the line in VIN sequence, it appears as though these had "rework faults" to rectify or were waiting parts. It was very rare for a RHD vehicle’s production date to be out of sequence to the build date of the cars’ produced around it, but it was not too uncommon with the LHD build, however it did improve as the production went on. Thus the VIN numbers listed below are a guide based upon the build date sequencing with the VIN.

And after many hours (days) that rounds out the LHD CSL production data and the final chapter in my cataloguing of the entire CSL production run. I have found it interesting in looking at the results, it is a pity BMW don’t make this sort of information freely available. In any case, let me know if I have been bereft of detail anywhere :rolleye:

Today someone asked me what number CSL I had of the UK production. I remembered this post, and thought for shits and giggles I'd try to work it out. Should be a sinch from the table below in theory, but something is not adding up. Monthly production adds to 525, but OP mentions 430 UK cars. What am I missing here :smt120

430 UK/Ireland cars were made including the 11 “data restricted cars” some of which were made in 2002.

You are assuming that in the batches per month that all were UK cars, they weren't. They were making UK cars at the same time as other markets. I just took the first and last UK VIN number for that particular month.

Edit:

You are right I will have to go back and recheck my numbers. My data is in excel and when I filtered it I added up the wrong numbers. A quick double check shows that it should be:

OK thanks, sorry, didn't mean to create work for you. Great effort getting all this data together.

Surprised how many CSLs were ordered with the double spoke rims. Almost all today seem to be on the CSL rims - makes me think they had suply issues, and dealers retrofitted the correct ones afterwards??? (bit like with the xenon washers).

RHD data checked an updated in the original post. I also missed detailing about the Japanese spec pre-production car that was built in RHD form. This is interesting as all of the production cars were LHD for that market. So I have included that bit of info in the RHD post.

Hopefully there aren't any more errors!

Just noticed this thread. Here is a brief info from Turkish market ;

Turkey imported 8 csl's. 7 of them officially imported thorugh BMW distributor, Borusan Otomotiv in Turkey and one black car through grey market.
Of those seven official imports, 6 are silver 1 in black.
The grey market import is black too.
They are all on the road.
Official imports are all nov 03 productions with jb987xx wins. Grey market one I don't know (smg display has 0 instead of N in neutral position if its a clue)

Unfortunately I can't remember them all. As I said they came in one batch they all had JB987XX.

I can narrow it down from this. Did they have front number plate holders and what language was the owners manual in and the instrument cluster? There were 9 silver grey cars built and 13 black, so we should be able to discount the latter. 7 of the 9 silver ones were delimited, but he language packs suggest they went all over Europe?
