Hi hope someone out there could give me peace of mind .my smg gear selection indicator is flashing when driving . The gear box itself seems to be normal but after a few miles driving the dreaded yellow cog lit up . I switched the car off and noticed the bong that reminds you to park in gear did not sound . The flashing indicator light continued flashing when I started driving again any suggestions?

Open then drop bonnet from 18 inches to make sure it's shut.

Sounds like it could be flat bat or dieing alternator. although i think that prevents gear change rather than flashing whilst driving.

Your car around 50k by chance?

Salmon relay seems to control the compressor so perhaps thats playing up and not holding enough pressure.

Bonnet catch is the first port of call, try slamming it again and see if it happens as you accelerate and air lifts bonnet

After that who knows!

Any probs with finding gears (1st / reverse) from standstill ?

No problem selecting 1st or reverse from stand still. Thinking it could be something up with the bonnet because I have had it touched up and the bonnet was off the car for painting.

Had the same problem, Bonnet catch does do this but also the relay for the SMG starts to play up. Its the salmon pink one under the bonnet. Worth having a spare and cost around a fiver from BMW.

Thanks all for the advice turns out it was the bonnet sensor contacts playing up.
Happy to get that sorted.
