Anyway, on with my Nürburgring trip report.


My first Nürburgring trip for two years!

I took the overnight ferry from Hull to Rotterdam on April 25th, then drove down, stopping at Düsseldorf Airport to collect Stefan (a friend of mine who had flown in from Sweden). We met up at the hotel with Dave, who had taken a different route from the UK.

Dave had brought his Opel Omega 500, a rare sight even in Germany, this homologation special is possibly one of only two such cars in the UK.

We did a couple of laps on Thursday evening, this was only the second time I had been on track with the M3. The M3 is a heavy car to stop at around 1600kg, but the brakes did well.


Friday was practice day for the VLN series (http://www.vln.de/index.gb.php), this is a great chance to get up close to the cars and drivers in the pits.

This Rover won the DTM back in 1986, driven back then by Kurt Thiim and prepared by Team Nickel

The car fell into the hands of BMW when they bought Rover, but when BMW sold Rover in 2000, the car ended up as an unwanted item. By chance, a German enthusiast heard that the car was at the UK Longbridge car plant, and the receivers, who were selling everything off said 'make us an offer', so the car ended up back in Germany, where it remains today.
The big Rover didn't have any need to reduce the high minimum weight back in the day, so the full luxury interior was used on the race car!

The car now runs a 5 litre V8, but the original engine is still kept by the owner

At the other end of the scale, we met these guys from the UK at the back of the pits, who offered us a prime advertising spot on their car in return for a new set of tyres, unfortunately we couldn't oblige, great to see people going racing on a budget though.

If you would take a large cashe of high res pictures of the Haribo Corvette racecar (gold car #90) so that I may make decals, I will trade you for a large disc of images of the ADAC and FIA GT BMW's that I took this year and last year. I am assuming that is your true interest.

I am making a book for the Callaway Competition team and I make decals for scale models. I would also supply you with the decals in 1/43 if you like. I was unable to attend the 24 hours as I am in the middle of a move.

Monday morning, a day trip to Stuttgart to visit the Porsche museum, it is around 190 miles from Nurburg and the route is mainly autobahn. I have been here previously, but as Stefan is a 911 owner I figured it would be rude not to! I must say, I never tire of walking round this museum.

Built at an estimated cost of 100 million euros, this impressive facility opened in January 2009.

924 GTP Le Mans, this car was driven at Le Mans in 1981 by Jürgen Barth and Walter Röhrl, intended only as a test, the car won it's class and finished 7th overall. This was also the beginning of the 944 model.

This car managed to ruin my final evening of lapping, he crashed and then broke all the rules by carrying on driving, trailing fluid for the final part of the lap, a biker then came to grief, thankfully the rider was pretty much ok, but his bike was wrecked. This guy was actually out practicing for the 24 Hour race, I can report that he crashed out of the 24 Hours within the first hour, poetic justice.

We called in at Classic Remise Dusseldorf on the way back, this is an amazing classic car collection, the interesting thing is that this is actually a showroom, everything is for sale.

Price for Mini Cooper is about right mate. If genuine and completely original, that's actually at the lower end and a bit of a steal with the Euro down on the Pound.
