I had a full AP brake upgrade, adjustable top mounts and new bushes front and rear carried out by Simpson Motorsport today. Another top quality job by Anthony and Joe as i'm now accustomed to :smt023
Helpful and induvidual based advice and walkround the garage as before whilst also taking the time to show me how to adjust the top mounts - whilst i ask stupid questions! :clown:

Yeah, you could say that  I needed new front disks as well as pads all round so was due a decent bill had i gone to BMW so thought i'd upgrade.
They did only charge me for 4 hours labour though when it actually took 6 and threw in a free towing eye for trackdays, so mustn't grumble i suppose!

Best thing I have done is have the BBK fitted. Stopping power is imense and the confidence it gives is excellent.

It's an ESS supercharger (top of the range CFR 525 i think), and not cheap...! :smt101

I have the same kit and am not happy with it. Hoping the pads will be knackered soon so i can switch from the Ferodos!

ferodo are not knowed to be the best, but they are still not bad, most E46 and Csl around ma place on AP are fitted with pagid RS29

Funnily enough, that's exactly what SM said. Use the Ferodo 2500 pads through winter when i won't be on track then switch to Pagid RS29 (which i had fitted on standard caliper set) or Performance Friction pads next spring

Would never butcher a CSL with a supercharger...as a limited model a standard car will always be desirable in the future. If you want to mess with the engine do it to a standard M3 I say......

I'd agree with this. But i guess if the owner has millions he can just buy another CSL if he wants an original one!

Be warned that the AP disk's will crack with the RS29 pads, and will with the PF too :(

Is that with PF discs you mean? When you say crack... how long will they last beforehand?

Why would you use a pad that cracks the disc, especially after spending all that money on them.

I'm sure the cracking is limited to extreme cases? It's certainly the first i've heard of it. Simpson said for me to fit Pagid RS29 for the track next season.
Beyond that they recommend swapping the worn discs/pads for Performance Friction discs and pads. The biggest expense of the brake upgrade are the AP calipers themselves after all - which are compatible with a wide range of disc/pad setups...

AP's cracking the discs is very common on the Evo forums, PF discs are superior and not as likely to crack. There was a rumour that AP had a rogue casting of discs, but seen as i've cracked two sets of 332mm and one set of 362mm discs i dont believe it.
Heres a write up i did on the PF 01 pads - you can see how the heat has stressed the discs halfway down the thread. Those marks then turn into small cracks which then turn into bigger cracks to the point its risky running them any longer. http://www.lancerregister.com/showthread.php?t=167960
Eventually they will do this, and this guy was only running DS2500 so how on earth he managed to crack this is beyond me ...

Thats why i went for hispec as they come with performance friction 380mm discs, I have seen the ap discs do the cracking for my self but i am sure they will be fine.
( AS THEY ARE ON THE SLOW SG CSL )

They are a great improvement over the standard set up and i am sure
you will love them when on track. Late breaking is fun as i am sure you will find out

HiSpec customer service is dia, and so was their product that i received - with the PF discs though i think it could be quite good :D
I think the Evo's are so blisteringly quick and with their AWD you can really punish the brakes harder than you could with a CSL - hopefully GD wont have any problems - AP are certainly are one of the best on the market :smokin:

Calipers look pretty hefty, but the disks look pretty 'normal' sized? I'm guessing they are a fair bit bigger?

Good choice Glendog, that is the set up i have and i was amazed at how good they are once you have bedded the pads in.
Makes me think why BMW put such rubbish brakes on the car in the first place....

I agree.
When I had my BBK installed, I was really surprised at the weight of the OEM calipers & discs in comparison to the BBK. The OEM's are so heavy!!! You would have thought with all that effort to reduce weight, and make the car such a 'focused' machine, that BMW would have put a better setup on the car.

Andy, that shouldn't be an issue. All the mods are reversable and the original CSL engine is pulled and stored in a box. Base engine is a E46 M3 motor with low comps, etc. Personally I think 700+bhp is over the top, but the 550bhp conversion is very tempting.

Excuse my ignorance but didn't realise it was a complete new engine. Thought it was just a case of bolting the SC to the original engine...learn something new everyday.

Think it was that BMW wanted the CSL to appeal to a wider audiance than just the track day crew so it needed have good manners on the road and not squeal and squeek everytime you press the brake which seems to happen with the extreme brake kits. Although it was billed as a stripped out racer for the track BMW wanted it to be the ultimate road M3......Or thats what the BMW PR departrment told me when I went over for a business trip to Munich.

The lower power supercharger kits are bolt on but not the one on this car. The owner wanted to save breaking open the lowish mile, original engine to fit the required pistons, etc. I believe the M3 motor used was second hand, rebuilt with low compression pistons, modified fuel rails, etc. A similar spec engine is in a matt black wrapped Swedish owned M3 that will be attempting to break the Loaded CSL's Ring record. Looking to break a full lap in less than 7.22! :119: Good luck with that. :smokin:

That was the Loaded csl. This is a different car, an M3, looking to break that record lap. It'll be at least Spring before it happens now.
