due a inspection 1 in 5000 miles and got the ring in two weeks so when back from there its pretty much due. went in for a price and the guy said they have a deal on at the min £669. i said 'thats not bad does that include, plugs, air filter, diff oil'. he said no its basically a oil service with a very good fine tooth comb check over, and check sheet included. i said do you check the valve clearances for that and is a rocker cover gasket replaced and he looked at this college a bit shocked and said i don't think so. checked on the web and they should be checked but never really get checked by bmw. :119:
now just a oil service is £169, its it just me or even if they do check the clearances does a inspection 1 sound steep?
for the record i won't be taking it there (not wanting to name) as not sure how good there m techey is. but bmw will be doing it.
que the 'get it booked in you tight cunt comments' :hahaha::thumbs:

sounds alot for a glorified oil service? how much will airfilter/diff oil/etc add to the total bill?

giraffe we all know 90% of dealers arn't doin the clearances, but chances are they don't admit it. i know elms can be trust tho :thumbs:out of interest how many e46 m3's actually need adjusting when they go in for servicing? reason i ask is mine will be goin in next week and i'll be asking for a report/spec of the ones that needed doin.
just wish i could do them and stamp the book but i think at resale time it may scare a few people off :banghead:

taking a adverage most cars need some sort of adjustment even tho it may only be a couple of them that need adjusting , the norm is about 6 will require reshimming , depends on how hard its been driven aswell , if driven hard inlet clearances can sometimes get smaller .

The Inspection 1 to me is the biggest rip off going, for what they actually do it is nothing but a glorified oil service. The things that do get "inspected" are all chargeable items so your paying a guy a lot of money to check things that take 10 mins - and then they will charge more if they need doing, valve clearances aside that i would agree rarely get checked as they don't ask for the car the morning before so the engine is cold.
That is one of my biggest annoyances owning an M...if you couldn't tell!

Looks like the prices advised are part of a bigger scheme - they are even making a point that they are doing valve clearances!

I know my new m3 by the service book is due inspection 1 in a year but for peace of mind. I will just book it for inspection 2 so will know all major things will be replaced will prob do the same with csl from now on too.I wonder though those with warranty can you say you want to skip basic one for inspection 2? :ban:

don't get me wrong £669 for a inspection 1 it not all that dear. but please note when taking it to a dealer make sure they do the clearences as i recon there's 2.5hrs labour (roughly) to do them and at there labour rate of £140 per hour plus vat it soon adds up. the point i'm trying to make is make sure they do them as other wise your getting ripped off. i had to tell my dealer in the nicest possible way that i run a garage and if there not done they'll be trouble! you could tell by there face they were'nt planning on doin them. very easy to tell if its been apart aswel as there should be a fresh rocker cover gasket.
only difference for inspec 2 is. plugs, air filter and diff oil (on request)

Were your valve clearances done Dave?

yes mate as far as i'm aware. fresh gasket, bolts all tight ect
been meaning text you. do you use the launch scanner? if so ever reset the clutch curve for the smg by using it? reason i ask is starting to get a slight bit of slur in higher gears. the scanner goes into the smg side and gives a few options. reset clutch curve and reset adaptations being two of them. i don't wanna fuck around resetting everything without knowing which one to reset.
failing that i'll get onto there tech help next week as there after service is quite good.
