After a day going round Silverstone oil level read .6 all day, changed car back to road settings and tyres on the way home level goes to ----. so stopped put half a litre of oil in to be safe still no reading until half way home then read 1.1, is this normal for the electronics to f*** up

i wouldnt track it at 1.1 but then again csl oil digital readings suck.... like B said take air box off to be sure.

---- just means unable to get a reading, normal to get this on a trackday and for it to sort itself out later.

As above if you have driven the car hard or used mtrack mode etc it won't give you a reading until the car has been in normal conditions for a period of time
It is mentioned in the handbook iirc

I was about to post a thread on this...
Mines currently reading +0.3, Which seems low but ive only just had inspection 2 at Elms last month. (Probably done 500 miles max since then)
Prior to the service it always read 0.9 - 1.0.
Any ideas? Giraffe?

Just top it up a bit. I doesn't need to be 1.1, has come back a little light tho

If you look though the pages on here doing a search, I remember there is a way of doing a instant check. I had it written down but I left it with the paperwork when I sold my car.

Any ideas? Giraffe?Mine always shows a little low after a service,i think they always put 5.5L in,but it usually takes a little more,as said above give it a little top up .2 or 3 of a Litre.;)

5.5 is what we put in should sit it around 0.4ish BMW state the Mpower engines shouldnt be filled to max , however if your tracking it with plenty of bends i would say you want oil close to max to reduce risk of oil starvation , hope this helps .

Hi Gareth, first thanks for agreeing to start work early on my car tomorrow.
This oil level thing does my head in. If 5.5l gives +0.4 (oil change including filter) how much oil will be needed to give +0.8 - +1.0? Is it linear? I was told by a mechanic once that the engine takes more than 5.5l to reach just below max on dip stick. BSh*t?
Have a good evening & see you tomorrow.

Have a good evening & see you tomorrow.I think the S54 takes the best part of 6L to show max on the dipstick.

I presume they use 6L and always seem to give me just over 1/2 L back

5.8 to 5.9 litres iirc puts it bang on top of dipstick and reads 0.9 on display.
I always checked the dipstick.

Remove your strut brace. Remove front section of airbox. Whilst in there, clean out your air filter and your trumpets.
Takes 10 mins to get to
