So after a short run at on Saturday start the car this morning and it just rattles immediately. Related to engine revs does it from idle. Open bonnet rattle seems top end near the front. Drives fine though, power OK no misfire or anything.
So Vanos?
Time to flex the warranty.

Hi,
From what you describe it sounds like
it could be a Vanos issue.

Been out with the dealer technician, agree it's got a problem. The shout of cam follower seems sensible as it has that tappety quality of a badly adjusted old A-Series Mini, and seems to be coming from the middle of the cam cover.

Had a similar problem on a previous M3. Thought the worst but it turned out to be a faulty connection on a sensor, located using the diagnostic system.

So one of the cam followers on the intake has worn to a 3 ridge shape, rather than smooth curve, which is all rather strange. And technician said that all the valve clearences needed doing, and some by quite a margin. Strange again suggesting maybe clearences not done despite full dealer history...

If some of the followers have worn like that it would suggest it suffered oil starvation to top end and has probably worn few of the other followers also even tho they may appear ok on visual inspection , this could be cause of incorrect valve clearances .

3 cam followers being replaced under warranty.
Impossible to prove but looking at the wear patterns it looks like incorrect clearances to me (I've been to look at the car with the technicians) especially as the cam is untouched for wear or grooving, measures the same etc., Also, the cam followers are not grouped together and the amount of wear on each differs, one is very bad. Doesn't seem to be any reason why it might have had oil starvation at the top of the engine plus the wear is very polished suggesting it's been happening over a period. Basically they are all carrying three flats on the follower rather than a smooth curve. All the other followers are fine.

What was the cause of all that then?

So in the end the car had 7 cam followers replaced under warranty. They were of varying states of wear and some were very faint, but they did them anyway.
On completion the car was quieter than ever, so must have been a growing problem. Still no real explanation other than the valve clearences were rather large according to the technician.
But I felt the car was somehow not pulling at the top end like it did before but I'd also spent two weeks driving 550 bhp so decided I was imagining it. But now just 120 miles later it rattles again, but this time it seems different and I'm sure when on idle if I lean into the top of the vanos and I can hear it rattle, but it sounds almost knocky in noise. So now I'm thinking that maybe the vanos wasn't built up properly.
I'm thinking about cutting my losses and finding the time to get it to Elms as its due an inspection in a few months time plus I can get them to check and sort this rattle properly under warranty. Who do I need to speak to to get the right advice from them? Or any other ideas?

Sorry to hear your having problems, Cooper Cobham had it in twice for rattling noise. Changed Alternator and pulleys first time then Vanos the second, very recently. They did the Inspection II as well.........
Hope you get it sorted, Emma & Gareth @ Elms is the way to go defo.
Thank f@*k for Warranty
