View Full Version : Correct Flap Operation??!

Suffering problems with the dreaded inlet flap - at first i thought it was stuck shut, so had a look about and read that one way of testing it was to get someone to rev the car to around 3500rpm whilst looking at the flap.
In this scenario it appears to operate fine.
However! When out on the road the car is still noticably quieter than it should be, so i decided to conduct a couple of tests; Whilst driving the car hard at around 4-5000rpm, i noted that theres no change in sound whilst turning the sport button on and off. Second test i did was to leave the sport button off, and allow the car to rev out to 7000rpm. When ive done this before at around 6000rpm there is a noticable change in sound as the flap opens - again, this time no change in sound!
Any ideas to what the problem could be?? Seems the flap isnt opening when it should be, though clearly the motors fine, unless the inlet pressure is too great for it to open against because its faulty?!

Why don't you just remove the thing? It's only purpose is noise reduction and removal takes about 5 minutes. Get it done and never worry again

My mate put the diagnostic on it the other day and showed me it working by running a test, very cool.
It had brought up a couple of faults in the memory. I think these flaps are regularly causing issues.

The cars under warranty, otherwise i would just be removing it. Juat want to get it right in my own head what the problem is before taking it in to them - its quite a drive and if its a £5 part then i'd rather buy it myself :)

Are there definitely NO issues with removing the flap altogether???

From what i can gather theres no issues - certainly from my own experience the time you will get det is when your driving a car hard, and that being the case, you'd be in sport mode anyway :)

There are definitely NO issues with removing the flap. All it does is noise surpression (their way of getting around the noise regs I guess).
There's no impact on anything else.

My flap was costing me 30bhp, it was only opening right at the top of the rev range. So, i can assure you are way down on paper, get it off.

Is this easy to do?
Do you get the induction roar all the way though the range of you remove the flap?

5 minute job, although BMSport did it. Its slightly noisier, but barely enough to tell the difference.

Removal process:
Remove the motor which turns the flap - take out the three allen bolts which hold it on and pull it off (needs a good firm pull to get it off)
The flap is then free to turn on it's own.
Tilt the flap and remove it by taking out the three allen bolts which hold it onto it's spindle.
Put the motor back on.
Don't start the car with the motor detacted or it gets out of sync with the spindle.
And don't drop the bolts like I did.

I had my flap removed at Simpson Motorsport yesterday. They said they've done it for a fair few owners. I watched Joe the mechanic do it (in case i wanted to re-fit it) and it's a real doddle - even for me! :clown:

Yeah... as I said earlier the hardest part is not dropping the screws as you remove them. I dropped one and it landed in an awkward place on the alternator - took about 45 minutes to extract :bigcry:

Well got the car back today - they couldnt find anything wrong with it, apart from a few fault codes that needed clearing. Guy i spoke to haddnt ever come across the flap sticking before - obviously not that experienced then!
Anyway, took the car away - was still 50/50 with it. Anyway, after an hour of driving, sound like ive got an intermittent fault. Sometimes the flap works, other times it doesnt - it'll be working, then if you stop, turn the engine off then back on, its 50/50 if the flap will work or not.
Going to try videoing it this w/e with my bullet cam for comfirmation :banghead:

Bummer! hope you get it sorted soon.
Be interested to find out what the problem was.
I think i will be removing my flap when i get home, seeing as there is no disadvantage to removing it.

Well i took the car out Saturday and it sounded to be working fine all day! :banghead:
Havent half used some juice though blasting it around
Didnt get out in her Sunday due to the weather so more testing next weekend! I would take the flap off completely too if the car was out of warranty :-D

When mine was at thorney's last time they found that my sensor was faulty and the flap wasn't opening fully. It wasn't an expensive fix but still a pain in the a*se.
If it as easy to remove as the guys are saying i guess you could remove it and then put it back on when it goes to the dealer????

I'm wondering if mines suffering the same, as sometimes it just doesnt sound as nice as it should?!
You'll think its working, but then when you start her up again you think - naaaa, cant have been working because although it sounded good before, its sounds awesome now!!! :banghead:
Think i'll try fitting a bullet cam under the bonnet to monitor it better :smt021

Bit of a necro-post, but mine has stopped working after my I took the CSL on its first track day at the weekend.
Should I just remove it or be a good boy and take it to the dealer? Car is under AUC warranty.
i got one replaced under warranty, but after a couple of months it stopped opening again, so i just removed it myself.
if i need any AUC warranty ill just pop it back in.
it really is a 5 min job.....just do it

I'd take it in as there is chance fix will be ok. Mine's been ok for 5 years.
