View Full Version : Where do you go after a CSL?

So we all obviously love our CSL's and many of us will own them for years to come but if you were to change to another car what would it be?

What is the logical step after the CSL?

I'm thinking it has to be a GT3?

Any other choices? I'd love a Scud or a Challenge Stradale but they're not realistic for me to buy any time soon

Like a lot of others, usually back into a CSL.

If it was regardless of money, probably a GT3RS for me, but they cost 2 or 3 times as much (996 / 997).....are they 2 or 3 times as good? I did look at a 996 GTRS, but I couldn't get the image of a standard 996 with a body kit out of my head?

In terms of value for money, reliabilty and depreciation - I can't better a CSL.

After 6 years, I still don't know.

I too think GT3/GT3RS but as has been said before, it isn't as practical.

I put the csl back on the road after winter god it was so good to be back behind the wheel i forgot how quick and how good they are.I don't think i would ever sell it but if i did maybe i would get a 997 turbo?.

Would quite fancy a 964 Carrera RS. That one at Mondello got me thinking again Barry, but they're too much cash for me!

Like the CLK Black too, but same problem as above

For me it would be a 997 GT3 Club Sport or RS (GT2 if i was rich enough) however from what i've seen the running costs are on the moon.
There was an Akrapovic rear silencer on PH the other month for one at the bargain price of £5k :bigcry: :bigcry: :bigcry:

For me there isn't anything out there that I'd want to replace the CSL with. Sure there are other cars I'd like to have a play with (when I win the Lotto ;) ) like the Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera or the Datsun R35 GT-R Spec 'V' but these would be in addition to the CSL :smt055 not instead of :smokin:

Wonder where Chris Harris' 997 GT3 ended up, as he'd put an Akrapovic on that. Think he got rid of the car when he bought a new RS 4.0 at the end of last year

By the sounds of it most go to GT3, GT3RS, GTR, and then forever bleat on about wishing they'd never sold the CSL.

I would not want to sell mine as it is worthless :smokin: but I'd like to have a Black Series CLK for the road

Instead of changing why not give it a few updates? Maybe supercharge it or something, then it would piss on a GT3 and stay up with the GTR and GT3 RS.
Hasn't someone around here gone for a new EVO?

I had 2 CSL's then got the standard M3 had it a week sold it then back in a CSL sold it to fund a second house.

Bought an EVO5 got the power bug sold it now and going back in a CSL

If I had the money it would be fun to have a GT2 RS

Hard to find alternatives with the sharpness of the CSL for the same money (buying and running). 1M is a cracking car, it put a huge happy grin on my face every minute I was driving it. But it's no where near as sharp on the track. A 1M with a bunch of mods might be something to consider!! But... naaaaahhhh... I'm going to stay in the CSL :smt055

I went from my CSL to this

Only driven it a couple of hundred miles on the road and so far although great fun doesn't like the bumpy roads around where I live, I think it's been set up for track use so I might get someone who knows what they're doing to soften it up a bit.

As I posted the other week, I've spent the last two weeks umm'ing and ah'ing about selling my CSL for a 997 GT3. Looked at the RS, but nowhere to put kids and that means very limited road time for it. Then looked at a (sweet) GT3 with carbon buckets and Alcons at JZM, who offered to bung in rear seat belt fitting as part of the deal and offered me a good trade in on my CSL.

All good, you might think. However...

...GT3 is somehow less emotive. Also, a lot less flattering if you're not a hero driver, which I'm not. So...

...off to Simpsons next week for APs, Supersprint and some fettling. Saves me £35k too. Going to the DN day at the 'ring in March if anyone from here will be there.

CSL is the best all round car ever made !!!

On track i like my 996 GT3 more but its a bitch to drive on the road .

I sold my daily drive RS4 and now i'm using the CSL as a daily drive and the GT3 is standing on my driveway , i don't used to drive around time and stuff .

My CSL is modded for track use but is still fun and good to drive on normal roads and is fun and quick around the track .

I was struggling with the same problem as the initial poster and half settled it with the purchase of a GT3. I did want to get the RS but could not justify the additional £15-20k for the RS. I of course could not bear to part with the CSL so am fortunate enough at the moment to keep both.

Both are similar cars but again poles apart. Of course the CSL has all the space ie four seats and a large boot but the GT3 has bags more power (in a straight line at least) and feels in some respect more planted but at the same time a bit skittish at speed. I like the fact that they are both smallish cars and here I refer to the e92 M3/GTR sized vehicles (behemoths in comparison). The bucket seats are a lot more efficient in the GT3 (and six point harness). It is a shame BMW did not put more effort in here.

As far as running costs go I will have to wait on that but having had two GT3 condensors replaced under warranty (~ £1,000) I can imagine the costs will be higher. The CSL has just been servicing and tyres so far oh and the rear box bracket repair.

Anyway enough waffle from me. I just thought I would chip in.

I too may well be over to the DN Nordschleife/Spa 20th and 21st March so may see the other poster whose name I forget, over there.

cant think of any other cars. Sure i would try a super fast car but the CSL is something special. it have a history. Its such an iconic car. the sound is one and only. :supz:

Agreed. The seats in the E30 M3 are better, but they wanted to replica the spartan Scheel seat of the E9 CSL. Those seats did not even have a headrest AFAIK.

AMG's are great as my friends said the most comfortable fast car to be in around the ring but lack in many areas for me,CSL the b-----k's and i will never part with but the porsche is an itch that needs attention at some point but only in addition! The GTR is great but i can't afford the rice.

GT3 RS is something i would love to have next to the CSL.....and if money would one day allow.....it would be f430 scuderia.
