From reading the tales and seeing the pics, this guy must have been fast as fook (Nuvolari):
A genuine racing hero of the highest order! :smokin: He made out-dated P3's and 158 Alfetta's do things they had no right too. Beating the Merc's at Nurburgring in 1935 was astounding!
The Gorilla
28-01-2012, 11:30 AM
Hi,
Nuvolari was the Senna of his era.
Hard to compare different decades in
Motorsport, but some rate him as the
all time Number 1.
For me its the point that Great Drivers
are born that way, its not a skill you learn
and then get better at with practice,
although some believe they do.
You can not teach somebody how to 'feel'
what a car is doing, to the extent that
Senna could pit after 1/2 laps and then
say which tyres were under or over inflated
but more alarmingly how much pressure to
put in or take out of each tyre !!!
There is no training in the world that can teach that.

The Gorilla.

Hi,
Cosworth KF V6 Engine.
All Alloy 2.5 Ltr V6 weighs 110 kg.
Makes 510 BHP at 10,600 rpm.
2500 km between rebuilds.
Used by Team Opel in the 2005/6 DTM Calibra's
and also by Andy Burton in his Space Frame
Rally Pug 306.
Link to the Burton Car when it had the
Cosworth KF V6 still fitted.
No mistaking a the unique sound of a
Flat Plane Crank.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNzVJUFGX_M&feature=relmfu
2.5 Ltr Race engine's today still struggle to
give the performance of this gem.

I love the story (from Richard Williams' bio of Ferrari) of Nuvolari cutting through a petrol station forecourt at near full tilt to gain an advantage. Think it might have been on the Targa Florio, and he did it twice
Afterwards, the gap between pump and kiosk was measured as being inches wider than the car

Rally jump
That looks a remarkably similar piece of road to the one Fifth Gear used to test jump some hot hatches. IIRC its a test somewhere down in Englandshire

Why is it you see e30 M3 race cars still racing but none of the Merceedes of the same vintage? Or are they all in Germany?

Hi,
Quote- ''Why is it you see e30 M3 race cars still racing but none of the Merceedes of the same vintage? Or are they all in Germany?''
Mercedes / AMG would not support or supply non-works
cars, hence there were no 'Customer' Cars as such
as with BMW.
This not only restricted the number of Merc 190's but makes
parts almost impossible to source and obtain.
Even owners of genuine Merc 190 DTM Cars find it
impossible to get anything from AMG, which is a real shame.
As an example there were some Merc 190 DTM 'Copy Casting'
engine Blocks available via Mercedes Classics in Stuttgart
and they were 5,500 euro each, bare cast block, still requiring
finishing and you had to 'know' the right people to even
have a chance of being on the short list.
Original DTM 190 82.7mm Crank is virtually impossible to obtain.

The Gorilla.

Hi,
I should have added that there is a
Company in Germany ''ATEC'' that
specialise in the Merc 190 M102
engines.
I asked a couple of years ago for a
price for a Merc 190 16v engine
circa 300 BHP [4 pot] none DTM
parts and it was 20/25,000 euro then.

Well respected by the Merc crowd.

Ah, the days of big rubber and little rims, I wasn't even thought of, when that picture was taken back in the 02 Tub era.
