Lawsy already raised this already but I thought I'd start another thread as I'm up for this and so are some of the Shimmy Racing team cars on OPL. GOOD chance of getting some discount if we all book together.

http://www.circuit-days.co.uk/mobileinfo.asp?id=431

So who is gonna try the Donington National open pit lane as the first track day of 2012?

Shown as £199 but I think we can get it for less if you bung your name down below;

4. EVLXGE (booked)
5. Curly (booked)
6. Lawsy and MBtech crew (booked)

Agree.

What have they said is wrong, dealers tend to blanket diagnose, ie replace everything on the system. 4 x shocks, pump, ecu in one swoop. This way they guarantee to fix the problem;), not very good for your pocket though

rstoughy
03-01-2012, 10:07 PM
hahaha no Ian i'll keep it.

Not wanting to bog down the thread with non donny stuff so will keep it short and try to cover most things.

2x front shocks are leaking. £1100 each + £350 per side labour
Oil leak from one of the turbos. £1200 + £1600 labour
Have another leak between the engine and box and they "estimate" between £4-6K to fix that. Timing chain is on the back of the V8 between the engine and the box and its basically a case of lift the car off the whole drivetrain then split it apart. problem with that is that when they are in there id want them to replace anything that looked iffy and probably also the chains.

I have found a company in the states who do shocks for $690 each and the head guy in my local dealership will fit them for me outwith hrs so think thats the route im going to go.
Thinking i might fit new rears at the same time as they are all the same age and am looking to start towing the CSL to track this year with it.

Oil leaks i can live with, both combined give me a drip the size of a 5p overnight out the undertray. think a soak mat tie wrapped in there will sort that out ;)

Shimmy,
The RS6 was in my mind when this occured, looked into conversion kits but none available for the A8 barge.

None of the indi's locally will look at it, can of worms seems to be the usual out come of any conversation.

Still looking at a couple of grand with the shocks only though so as i say play is off until it's back on the road. (hopefully by mid Feb)

I've been looking at Long Whatton and Melbourne for a decent hotel that has a proper bar.

Most were about £109-119 a twin or double room inc breakfast which seemed just about ok....

But just tried Harpurs of Melbourne hotel and bar and looks classed and cool bar and in the middle of Melbourne and singles and doubles are coming in £30-50 inc breakfast! .....per room .

www.harpursofmelbourne.co.uk

It itht be worth booking hem all at once so the prices don't go up so DONT BOOK GUYS until we have all names and then I can do tomorrow for all.

Apex arc8 9.5/18, come in et35 or et22, was going to get the et35, didn't think there would be clearance issues.

What's the minimal spacing you need with your offsets for the Nitron shocks.

With mine I think you'd need about 30-32. But I don't see why you shouldn't be able to change the helper spring and get the bottom platform in a better place, higher or lower to miss the wider part of the tyre, or worse case use a Intrax platform as they seem smaller. Worse case et35 with 10mm spacer.

et32 will mean a 3mm spacer, that's what you use, so OK with the hub.

10mm?? rubbing?? Are the hub extenders a no go then?

Yep, 10mm to et25 will mean -3 camber nd still close to wheel arch, try and stay away from this.

I use 3mm spacer and it's fine as hubcentric bit still pokes out enough. You could try the 5mm but most say it doesn't allow enough of the hub ring to poke through.

Might be worth having a range of helpers springs handy when you fit them.

They will be under a lot of lateral stress though so you need to make sure they an take it. It's not just a location device but releases stress for the bolts.

Mmm didn't think of that. Unless the hub extender touches the back face of the cutout from the wheel, it will move. Unless you put shims in.

Setra uses these wheels with Moton shocks, surely the pistons on them must be huge. so the diameter of the shock will be comparable to Nitron. But he has extended arches:banghead:

I want these wheels but can't be arsed fooking about with different helper springs.

I get the theory and your thinking and going lightest is theoretically best, but in the real world, I doubt you will notice no difference in your lap times.

Far too many variables to go with.

On the rotational mass theory, who makes the lightest discs?

yeah it was a good day at Donny yesterday sorry to hear about Lawsy getting turfed off, I was hoping for a passenger lap late on in the afternoon you were flying mate the cars a beast:thumbs: good to see the rest of the guys and CSL's were flying and I've got to say the big fella Shimmy was peaking :smokin:

Barry and Yanto did fantastic considering it was their first visit to Donny and the old warhorse wheels was flying the last hour, the shopper struggled a bit in the dry and the scalp bag was pretty light ;)

What a glorious day.....not a cloud, cool but sunny. Perfect.

So we had a night out on the Saturday in Melbourn. Beers and Curry with TerryB, Curly, Yanto, oNeill and his poor lady:bigcry:

ONeill drunk 2 beers which was one too many and didn't stop talking until 12 midnight, non stop. But luckily he only mentioned S2000s twice. Things are looking up.

Curly kept to his side of the bedroom which was unexpected but a relief, and luckily unlike NorthernJim he wears something in bed so no need for me to hide under the covers.

Sunday morning was cloudless and stayed so all day. Superb and made me ver y happy. There must have been 30 cars and 40 people there from CSLREGISTER, PureGT and OPL. About 8 CSLs, 5 m3, two RaceM3, 6 ShimmyRacing mx5, 964, Clio, mr2, GT3, GTR, Fiesta, EvoVIii, 6RS, Skoda Shopper etc etc. Great Turn out.

My day however didn't go to plan totally. Vibration on the way to Donny turned out to be a dodgy wishbone ball joint, heavy vibration under braking and knocking when turning. I decided to scale back the laps for the day but by 3pm id forgotten that rule and was putting in the miles.

Oneill was certainly quick on the pace. Managed to have a couple of sessions on track nose to tail with which was good fun. I think I only did 6 sessions on track. All 6 I had passengers however for the last one I dropped them off and went out for 5 laps 'empty' which was fun.

Giraffe and Tom turned up about 9am which was excellent. I told them to bully their way into any car they could and Giraffe managed to share with Ken in a 964 (not his car) which was duly stuck in the gravel and damaged by the recovery truck.

As for my laps, I have to say that pretty quickly the lap times were down to my best ever which was good. Then in the afternoon a few 1m20s came into view which was my target for the day. I never really had a perfect lap but was pleased its the day. I played with the Nitrons a little and NorthnJim and me had an episode on CRANERS where the back stepped out which we had to decipher. Popped into the pits adjusted the rear shocks and back out and all ok. (see Nitron thread for update).

I think overall I have improved on Old Hairpin to Coppice and maybe Redgate but was slower on Hollywood and CRANERS and maybe not as fast as I could be on Goddards.

So car survived, well didn't fall off, Nitrons learnt a bit more, lap times improved, Skodas and Mx5s spanked. Need to get two new wishbones and bushes me thinks.

Well done everybody, great day and role on Silverstone GP on Easter Monday 9th April (see members section for discount).

In combination with front ironing board yes eliminates all under steer and oversteer really enjoyed chucking it everywhere even when 888's had gone off after couple of laps just need to be stickered up ready for timeattack )

My best was 1m 20.67s last session. I didn't record the afternoon sessions other than this one for some reason but I remember a best at 2pm being 1m 20.8s so I don't think I bettered it.

Theoretical best 1m19.5 :smt055

My best in the Datsun.

1.19,07 that was before lunch- shame I didnt get out after lunch, I would have brought the lap times down a bit.

Not bad for out the box. I reckon there is a 1.16 in standard form.

If I fit rear roll bar and 285 tyres on front I reckon in the 1.15-1.16 area.

The thing was fucking epic- but fuck me does it like a drink on track:whistle:
