Right then, I'm seriously thinking of dumping the E90 M3 and jumping into a 1M and Terry's recent purchase is tipping me over the edge.

Should I do it yes or no?

Would prob say yes, newer car, E92 will be replaced in next couple, GTS last of the parts bin special edition ( some of halfords )

Think it would be a great bit of fun, do you need 4 doors though ??? only downside to think off as CSL is the toy anyway

Colour, I'm thinking black this time having done white last time.

From what's been written about it, yes yes yes.

Have you seen the video of Advevo (sp?) chasing a CSL round the Ring in one? If you watch that and don't trade, you are certifiable!

Do it!

Yes. Had one for a day from my dealer and thrashed the pants off a few at Ascari Race Resort. Best car there.:smokin:

Just not into the GTR Shim but I see your point. I reckon the 1M will be more fun day to day and I don't think they're ugly.

Haven't driven an e90 m3 yet, so can't draw comparisons. I've test driven 2 1M's so far, an orange one back in June didn't really get a chance to open it up :hahaha: sales man wouldn't stop talking about gatzo cams in bushes which just put me off.

Recently had one more go and whilst its very quick 110mph in 3rd (don't ask how i know :gayfight: ) it just lacked something don't know what..

I'd go V8 personally..

It's a boy racer car and unless you are 25 it looks inappropriate in my opinion...
It's like 'socializing' with a 20 year old girl.

'Poor man's M car' it's the way BMW M sells it and the way they made it (engine from 135i, seats from 135i and the list goes on).

The E90 M3 is/feels special and the V8 engine is BMW M at it's best, with a redlimit of 8.400rpm
The 1 M has a slightly tuned N54 engine.

Mmmm, votes are well loaded towards 1M. Gonna have another drive in one next week. Been offered a cracking deal as well.

Alex, don't agree at all re 1M not a real M car. M engineers I have met admitted it was a bit of a parts bin raid special but they didn't half do a fab job of it and the muscular looks absolutely do it for me. It's no boy racers car for sure. Feels like a proper M car to drive, as long as you turn off the DSC and let the diff work. Unfortunately they did lift the DSC straight from the 135i with a few mods and it feels like it. Seriously hinders progress until you turn it off.

Have to say, would miss the V8. Got a nice drive down to Portsmouth last week to remind me what a great engine and car it is.

Lots of thinking to do.

Limited to 450.
Some very good deals to be had. They were around 40K basic, but now fully loaded with Demo miles they're coming in around £40K with the choice options. Maybe less now, it's a couple of months since I was twisting dealers melons!

Alex, I'm sure that the 1M would make a better everyday car than the M3. For me the M3 feels heavy and isn't that nice to drive a short journey, whereas the 1M feels much lighter and easier to drive to the shops. That's only one example of course, but these are my reasons that back it up...

I think the key thing is that the 1M is more fun more of the time. If you're in the mood then it will put a massive smile on your face. It is so quick it's unreal. On VPower fuel it recorded 380bhp and 420lbft as standard - these figures are a lot higher than the official figures from BMW. What that means is that it will be quicker than an M3 in almost any situation. The car feels lighter and as you rightly say with the TC in MDM or switched of it is a hoot to drive - I think the car communicates with you better than any other BMW has done for a long time.

Also in terms of the daily grind, it will be more economical and just easier to get in and drive.

But the biggest thing for me is that there are only going to be 450 of these in the UK, which puts it into CSL territory in terms of rarity and potential future desirability. You won't see many more of these on the road ever and it does get admiring looks from other people - I even saw a kid at the supermarket point at it and shout at him mum - look it's a 1M... :)

One more point - I haven't yet had the opportunity to try to show another quick car just how quick it is on the road - but I think there are very few cars around that would actually be much quicker, especially with the DMS remap - 415/475 and 1495kg means that it will blow away any GT3 and it would need to be a Turbo S 911 or a GTR to be much quicker.

I also think it will keep more of its value than any other M car, which has to be a bonus too :)

Must have options

For me I went for the following

Media Pack, which includes Satnav and Bluetooth
Heated seats
Non electric seats (they allow you to sit a fair bit lower in the car)
Harmon Kardon upgrade - this is mind blowing and much much better than the professional option

Also if you can get the extended servicing option then you'll have 5 years/ 60k miles of free servicing which is a real bonus

As for colour - I'm not sure that it looks great in black, but then lowered and spacered it might be a lot better - have a look on www.1addicts.com and do your research

AlexGTT

Great feedback Terry. That's all gone into the memory bank for consideration. Couldn't agree more on the fun factor. That's exactly what drew me to the car after driving. And the looks. Some hate but I absolutely love it. Looks cartoonish from some angles. :smokin: Dropped and bit and spacers is all that's needed.

1m has far more "useable" power too.

As you well know the V8 is awesome, but you need to wind her up to get her singing at full pelt..

Whereas the torque from them tubbys on the 1 will make road driving seem effortless.

The 1 is so much more aggressive and if it came in DCT there would 100% be one sat on my driveway right now. E92 can at times look a tad bland, esp in standard guise.

Go for it Alex- it would make an awesome road car for ring trips too:smokin:

I did not realise they do not come with DCT but either way that does not bother me. I am still not 100% sold on the CSL (beautiful car) clutchless manual. Why no manual option. Moreover the 1M is ugly and unproportional in looks. I admit that I have driven neither the new M3 nor the 1M but at least the M3 has some presence about it. I still enjoy the V8 in my M5.

I am sure the 1M is probably more practical in these days of frugality and the move to smaller cars. Let's face it the M3 has like most cars got bigger and bigger. I would guess and say that it is as big as my M5 which was supposed to be the medium sized family saloon. There is something surely wrong there.

Anyway just my opinion.

After considerable thought and another test drive I have decided to keep the M3. I simply cannot live without that epic V8 in my life and the following reasons:

1. The last true N/A screamer from the M division.
2. The V8 and DCT combo is brilliance.
3. The wife loves the car and more importantly has no problem driving when I've had a few .
4. A setting to suit every mood from soft, relaxing full auto soft to balls out rip your head off full throttle shifts and all inbetween.
5. Very practical 4 door with big boot and fold flat rear seats.
6. Blends in with traffic and is just another BMW to most.
7. It's been an absolute pleasure to drive at all times and totally faultless.
8. It's :smt055 and it occasionally takes a temptation to realise.

You made the right choice, e92 m3 is the last real m3 and some owners are having traction issues with the 1M. There's also 26 for sale on the auc site, and dealers are offering substantial discounts to get rid.
